Hi, I have just purchased a small cottage. Currently it has a bathroom downstairs and 2 bedrooms upstairs. With the space I can have 2 double bedrooms upstairs, 1 single and a bathroom or 2 large bedrooms and leave the bathroom downstairs. Which would be best?
Also the stairs are very steep, would you suggest leaving them or putting in a spiral staircase?

Just to add, there would still be a toilet and sink downstairs.

Bathroom upstairs if you'd still have a loo downstairs. Depends on your plans for the future really, is you family likely to expand? How many bedrooms might you need then, of course you could always make more changes, space permitting. Upstairs bathrooms are much more private, I had a downstairs one in my last house and it as a bit if a pain carrying all my clothes etc downstairs and I was always seemed to be leaving something upstairs. Although it's OK if you leave a bathrobe in there or you don't mind wandering around in a towel (like I did half the time). It's a nuisance to have to go down in the night to use the loo too. As for the stairs, a spiral would look great if the cottage has been modernised, although if the stairs is an original feature then maybe it would be nice to keep it. It all depends which would be the most in-keeping with the look you want to achieve, traditional or modern and which would be more practical for you. Whatever you do it'll be probably look great, love cottages, been on the look out for a nice one myself lately, I'm a bit sick of my modern semi, cottages seem to have so much more character. Trouble is any for sale locally are a bit small, just have to keep on the lookout for something bigger. Hope the renovations go well, not too many disasters, and you really enjoy living there, all the best!

First about the spiral staircase. Always think about the logistics of moving heavy/bulky furnishings or items if this is the ONLY stairway you have to the upperfloor. It's quite exciting to have a spiral staircase & it saves floor space to your premise.
About having a bathroom on the upper floor, make sure you have proper waterproofing installed to the floors & walls of the bathroom cos in the event of a water leakage or over-flowing, it will make a big mess downstairs(if the dwelling is of wood/timber construction). Ideally, it is always nice & convenient to have an attached bathroom to every bedroom irregardless whether it's downstairs or upstairs. I would suggest that you have one bedroom with bathroom each for the upstairs & another for downstairs. Think about the aged and/or physically challenged having to climb or descend the steep stairs everytime he/she needs to use the bathroom.

Our Bathroom used to be downstairs .
Then we moved the Bathroom upstairs and had a bigger kitchen
I can honestly say its the best thing we have ever done is move the bathroom upstairs
No more running downstairs in the middle of the night to go to the loo

It depends on your use as a family. One bathroom is tough if there are more than two in the home. An extra bath always increases the homes value. Cottages and cape cod style homes usually do have steep stairs but I wouldn't change them out to a spiral that would be cumbersome to use. Just make sure the stairs are carpeted as opposed to bare wood.

Put the bathroom upstairs with bedrooms. Check out space saving fixtures. Some of them are astonishing. If you just install a shower (omit the tub) you may be able to fit in one dbl bedroom and one single bedroom. Good luck!

You could have one upstairs and one downstairs saves running up the stairs in the daytime and down the stairs at night time on the other hand the exercise might do you good. lol

downstairs bathrooms are a pain in the ****, you have to traipse through the whole house just to get a shower when you wake up. Unless you have en suite, you definitely need an upstairs bathroom.

if the rooms upstairs are large it would be better to make one of them an en-suite
spiral stairs are great but not practical, how would you get a new bed up there for example? best leave the steep stairs in I would say
