I've been super interested with photography since I was a kid.
When my mom bought a canon powershot 460 (simple digital camera) I just couldn't stop taking pictures. I'm just worried I might not maximize the features of a DSLR coz I don't have much knowledge about it

Not really since most dslr have an auto setting. This feature will turn the dslr into a point and shoot camera which you are familiar anyway. But auto does not work great everytime. You may find yourself in tricky photo situation and you have to manually set the camera. That is the time that you need to know your camera and photo techniques. So don't worry and get a dslr.Use its auto setting and at the same time learn the manual fully, read photography books and magazines and websites. Just enjoy and learn and pretty soon you will be good at it.

I love photography too and never took any classes. I've taken some great shots. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. And your camera should come with an owner's manual to tell you how to maximize it's usage. You can always look up info on the net about it too.

no, you don't have to but it helps. If you know the basic principles of photography learning from/avoiding mistakes will be much easier otherwise it will always come to:
Bad picture - no idea why - I always have the same settings and some are good and others are not.

Well no, you don't have to learn it in order to use the camera (that's what the manual is for), but it's certainly helpful in teaching you how to compose a better picture.
