I'm watching a adult female lab. I have noticed that she's leaving tracks of blood on my carpet. Her owners say that she's in heat. Does that happen..because I've never seen that happen before in my life. I don't think female dogs get menstrual cycles...or do they? Can anyone tell me what's going on?

yes a female dog in heat is like a menstrual cycle. Keep her away from all un nuetered males. You can buy a garment to put on her to keep the blood from getting on your carpet at your local pet store.

Previous answers are correct. Your 'lodger' is in season and will be very responsive to male dogs soon. Don't take her out or let other male dogs in! I would have thought that the owners would have explained this to you!
I don't know if you dog-sit as a way of making money but make sure that you clean your carpets thoroughly because if other male dogs come to stay they will be drooling and marking your carpet. They will know that a ***** in season has been around as the scent remains for a very long time, I can assure you. Also be aware that if YOU go out on your own that male dogs may show interest in you to some degree.

Good luck

Yeah that's more that perfectly normal. At this time of her cycle a dogs uterus is very thickened and swollen in preparation for pregnancy. All the blood vessels are full and become very leaky which is why you get the discharge. This is slighly different to a human period/menstruation which is actually the uterus lining breaking down again because you're not pregnant. You can actually buy panties for dogs so that it doesn't leak everywhere.

That's completely normal for a dog in heat; they don't get menstrual cycles in the same way that human females do, but they do have a period of estrus or "heat" during which they are fertile. A bit of bleeding during this time is normal; they even sell doggie diapers for it :-)

All unspayed females do this, and some more than others. She will soon be in heat, which is the time after the blood tinged discharge stops. AFTER the red discharge stops, is the time when she will be receptive to males, and needs constant supervision.

Every 6 months female dogs will go in heat and "spot". Yes, that is the same as a period.

Yes female dogs have menstrual cycles, in that way they are like us. Give her plenty of hugs and love!

YES A FEMALE DOG COMES INTO HEAT ( PERIOD) ABOUT EVERY 6 MONTHS.
YOU NEED TO KEEP A VERY CLOSE EYE ON HER WHEN SHE IS OUTSIDE sEH SHOULD ONLY BE WALKED AS IF LEFT OUT ALONE THERE COULD BE AN ACCIDENTAL BREEDING. yOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT A MALE WILL DO TO GET TO A FEMALE IN HEAT.

They do if they're not spayed.
