My last name is Dittmer. I know it is German and I have always wondered what it means or what it derived from. Does anyone know?

It is, I think, a form of Dietmar (also Dittmar, Dettmar) and it comes from the old German words
diot (people) and -mari (great, famous)
The meaning is then: The one who is famous among his people
- a celebrity in short
