Not at all. Actually it would be odd if you choose the language you learn based on relatives or whether or not you've been in the country - that's irrelevant. You can always go in future.

No it's not odd. I'm learning French, neither of my parents are from there, I have no family there and I have only been there once.
However I love the language and have a desire to learn something other than english.
If a language appeals to you then learn it, speaking another language is one of the best personal goals you can accomplish.

No, not at all. Learning another language is a great thing. When I took French in high school, I had no idea of when I would use it; a decade later I found myself having a halting conversation in Paris.
Also, I'm currently learning ASL, with no deaf friends or relatives.

as a teenager sixty years ago, a friend of my familly suggested i study spanish in high school because spanish would become the second language in the united states... and so i studied spanish for two years...
i used that spanish over the years trying to communicate with people yet knowing i had a difficult time understanding...
eleven years ago i went to guadalajara, mexico, to study spanish for six weeks in an intensive program and realized that the spanish i had used all these years really needed some serious retooling...
i never regreted my attempts at speaking spanish with others in germany, france or italy during years in between because people understood me and i them in our attempts at communicating with each other.. but i have gotten better since '96...
what a wonderful gift one brings to another person when one can communicate with them in their language... after all not everyone in this world speaks english...
besides one learns to see the world through the eyes of another's culture when one learns to speak their language... language empowers one to grow into a fuller and richer human being...

Don't see why. I doubt whether any of the present day scholars of Latin, Ancient Greek or Sanskrit learnt the language just so they could order a beer on their vacation...
