i feel suspect to any religion that has to bargain the rewards of martys with 72 virgins, it is like referring to heaven as the whorehouse in the sky.

As a muslim, i would like to tell you that the idea of having 72 virgins after martyrdom is completely fictious and immoral.
No matter how much u search, u will never find a reliable source for those claims.
I am a muslim, i know.
Before you argue, this point, u have to understand the idea of martydrom.
Martyrdom is dying in the way of Allah, therefore, killing innocent people doesn't count.

The following are quotes from the Holy Quran:
"If you kill one innocent human, it is like u have killed the whole humanity."
"If you save one human, it is like u have saved the whole humanity."

So, if you are a martyr, u have never killed an innocent human. Therefore, Al-Qaida is a terrorist organisation.
They will not be martyrs.

To be a martyr, u should fight with courage, and die to keep the truth of our Lord and the existance of Allah.
To die for Our one and only Creator, is what we call in Islam, Martyrdom.

So, if you are a Martyr, you have done well to fight for your God. So you will go to Heaven.
If you go to heaven, u can have anything that you want. That includes the ones that are not forbidden, drinks tastier than all that existed in our world. Fresh fruits and freshly made meals set ready for you at your command.
AND, women as many as you want, however you want them, without getting tired.
So in the end, the fact is, it is not 72 virgins that you get if you are a true martyr. You can get as many women as you want, however you want them.

It might not even be 'virgins' ! The Arabic word for 'virgins' comes from the Aramaic meaning 'white raisins'; the desired thing that people would serve when a special guest would arrive. So those Muslims blowing themselves up might be shocked to see 72 white raisins as a reward! Won't they be disappointed!

I would like to see one person making this claim about 72 virgins to give a source for it.
When I first saw people making this statement the number of virgins was all over the place, everything from 20 to hundreds of virgins.
I think this claim is just propaganda B.S.

Muslims are motivated to terrorism because the Koran, the Bible of Islam, tells them that fighting non-believers is a duty of every Muslim and the only way to be certain of going to heaven is to die fighting in the cause of allah.

If they can make it to heaven, one of the rewards all Muslims are promised is 72 virgins. The number of virgins is not specified in Koran, it comes from a quotation of Muhammad recorded in one of the lesser known Hadith. ("Hadith" is an Arabic word meaning traditions. After Muhammad's death, several collections of his deeds and sayings were assembled. These collections are called Hadith and form the second most authoritative document is Islam, right after the Koran.)

According to this page, the specific Hadith in which the number of virgins is specified is Hadith Al-Tirmidhi in the Book of Sunah (volume IV, chapters on The Features of Paradise as described by the Messenger of Allah, chapter 21, About the Smallest Reward for the People of Paradise. The same hadith is also quoted by Ibn Kathir in his Koranic commentary (Tafsir) of Surah Al-Rahman:

"The Prophet Muhammad was heard saying: 'The smallest reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from Al-Jabiyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana'a [Yemen]."

So it isn't the case that only martyrs get the virgins, but the only way to get the virgins is to get to heaven, and Koran is quite specific that the only way to be certain of getting to heaven is to die in Jihad.

I hope this has helped.

Thank you, "Keep the Faith". So perhaps you get 72 wives. That doesn't mean they are virgins. Or young. Or pretty. Or skinny. Or clean. Or smell good. Or disease free. Or nice. Or compliant.

Oh, dear! I don't think they have thought this through!

I assume the number 72 has some historical significance or is an important base number in their original system of mathematics.

Sounds like the work of a bartering culture. Though after 10 or so of those virgins, I think you'd start begging for a pro.
