any sport even a girlyone like kickboxing teaches you how to throw a punch or a kick and defend them as well.while not effective on the street it is helpful and of some limited use.

Kickboxing as performed by point sparring schools, mildly effective. Kickboxing describing Muay Thai trained strictly for the ring, could definitely be effective. Muay Thai mixed with grappling, takedown defense, and good competition/sparring training, "live training", definitely effective. But knowing that one good strike to the kneecap and then a very hasty escape is best defense, priceless.
Self defense and "street effectiveness" are very subjective. You get what you put into it, so to speak. Your brain is the most used and most useful tool in making an art streetable. If you know what moves will work efficiently and a high percentage of the time and how to apply them outside of the ring/class/sparring, then it's streetable. If you need a "kickboxing for Dummies" book, it's not streetable. Simple as that.
But, ultimately, regardless of whether an art is streetable or not, your usage of what you learn and the knowledge that any fight in the street is life-and-death and you should be trying to ESCAPE a street fight, not prolong it, is the best defense.

Would you rather be in a streetfight and know how to kickbox or be in a streetfight and not know how to kickbox? Kickboxing can be very effictive on the street. Some of your kicks might not be as effecitve is street attire and sneakers though. But straight boxing and knee strikes will surely put someone on their back. You should learn some grappling aswell. Or at least some takedown defences because I guarantee as soon as he gets tired of getting hit more than he's hitting you; he'll try to take you down.

Personal opinion, you'd be better studying regular boxing, and supplement the kicking with something that actually works....such as Muay Thai for example.
The punching in kickboxing is basic, which is a good thing...the more basic something is, the less chance it has at being too fancy and failing.
The kicking elements of the sport, in my opinion are way too Tae Kwon Do-esque. Too many high instep kicks that are more dangerous to the user than they are effective on a universal level.
If you're going to kick, kick low. Personally, I prefer stomping kicks no higher than the thighs.
Don't get me wrong, kickboxing CAN be effective, anything CAN be....but it's sorely limited in it's applications.

Reminds me of a question asked of a 70 year old Gung Fu master "Sifu. How many attackers could you defend yourself against at the same time?" The Master immediately replied " One Hundred" which stunned the asker. However, the Master added " One hundred small children"
Against a scrawny untrained spaced out kid kickboxing is very effective but not so against a big strong wrestler or grappling exponent. Just an example.

Yes, completely. Most people who attack you on the street will have little training, and martial arts training will give you a significant advantage. My favorite kickboxing attacks are the knees and elbows.

depends on how you train.
odds are, YES kickboxing tends to train very realistically.
Actually I would be hard pressed to find a class that doesn't that is not a "gym run" cardio kickboxing or executive kickboxing (basically tae-bo without copyright infringement except it existed before tae-bo) type of class.

That would depend on how realistic your kickboxing training is.
If you sparr constantly (full contact), on top of your training, you chances to be successful on the street (as well as the ring) greatly improve, but don't guarantee a win.
I hope this informations is useful.
good luck!

any training gives you an advantage over drunken thugs. i don't know personally, but from what i hear, kickboxing can be pretty effective. but it helps to know ground fighting techniques too because thats where most fights end up. i recommend rounding yourself out with some sort of cross training. thats what i'm trying to do.

Depends on whose street you're talking about. On a street in a nice suburb, probably. But near ghettos and squatter areas, not likely since you'll be goin up against knives and guns.
