Do crowns on black/dead teeth cover the blackness of the tooth so it looks completely white?

Yes. A crown is a complete structural "jacket", first the tooth is drilled to the shape of a peg, to fit inside of the crown. The crown will be molded to be just the same size and shape as your natural tooth was. Depending on what the dentist orders, a tooth can be gold, or it can be your natural shade of white.

I have one, the tooth looks grey. Its not so grey that you anyone else but me can tell in regular light, but in a black light it looks funny.
