The Bullmastiff came into existence as a companion and coworker with the British gamekeeper. At the time of the development of the breed, poaching game was a capital offense. The gamekeeper needed a strong, agile, intelligent, and obedient dog to assist him in his work and for his own protection. The Gamekeeper's Night Dog, the forerunner of the Bullmastiff as we know it today was just right for the job.
Not only does the Bullmastiff have all these characteristics, but he is also possessive and strong willed. He is not the dog for a person who will not combine affection with consistency and discipline. Remember in purchasing a Bullmastiff that this breed was developed as a GUARD dog. While a proper Bullmastiff is loving and friendly, he still has a strong instinct to try to control a situation. A dog is a pack animal. The family he lives with, and any other animals he lives with are his pack. In every pack there must be a leader, and there is a hierarchy, or pecking order. The dog must know his place to be comfortable in his surroundings and mentally secure in his status in life. The dog must ALWAYS defer to all the members of the household and accept any friends welcomed by the family. The exception to this is that no dog should be subjected to teasing and ill treatment. Children and guests should be clearly educated to the fact that the dog is a living, feeling creature, and not some sort of toy.
The Bullmastiff's combination of power, intelligence, and strong will, and devotion make him wonderful companion for someone looking for a dog with character. Life with a Bullmastiff is seldom dull. Control must be established by the owner from the SECOND one takes possession of the dog.
Bullmastiffs make excellent companions and guards because in their minds THEY OWN YOU. They will try anything to get their own way. Males will generally try to force the issue or pout; females usually try the coy approach.

Here is a site that lists how dogs are with children:
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/children.htm
It will depend on the personally of the mix, which breed is dominate. The Boxer is great with kids. The Bullmastiff is rated: usually good with children. It will depend on how old the child is.

depends on the dog's nature, how is the temperment of the parents? don't just take the breeders word, spend time with them, lots of it, and the ages of your children and how they react to him. If they illicit his prey drive, then no. Think twice about this your kids cannot be replaced, another puppy in the future might be wiser.
Boxers are usually good with kids, but poorly bred and socialized ones are not, also make sure your pup is at least 8 weeks before you take him home. He needs that 7th week to grow into a good dog for your family. the littermates teach him bite inhibition at that age, if they don't learn it, amongst other things, training will be more difficult all around for you.
Bullmastiffs are usually good with kids, English Bulldogs are usually good too. Depends on the nurture vs. nature in most cases.

I don't think this would be a good kid's dog, especially for young children. Bulldogs, and Bullmastiffs can be rather aggressive and stubborn.
In my opinion, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and most any of the larger terrier breeds make good kid dogs.
Dave,
If Doll were talking about an English Bulldog, I'd agree with you 100%. But this is a cross-breed she is talking about, and I'd bet a pint of Guiness that the bulldog mentioned is a pitbull-type bulldog, not an English Bulldog. I really don't see that dog as being a good choice for kids.

Hmmm. Well that seems like a good mix. They both have lots of love and are highly trainable. Socialization is the key! Start as young as possible with it and you will end up with happy dog and kids!
