Jesus: Man, Messiah or Fictional
Here is an interesting though. Not meant to prove or offend people.
Throughout the years the thought of Jesus existing has helped many. Given people hope and stopped some violence. Some wish to be like Him and better their lives. Others seek to better the lives of others in service to Him. Sacrifices were stopped because of Him, and happiness has spread across the lives of millions because of Him. He could have been a big hoax, and if He was then that betters my point. Assuming that Jesus was fictional or a man.... and tricked us into thinking He was a Messiah...
Why is it that a lie has done more good then bad?
Should we re-think our whole stand on truth vs lie? I mean here the lie has done more good and helped millions if not billions of people.
So then how can one say that lieing is bad?
(just a thought i am kind of bored and this ran across my mind so.... it may not seem good or well thought out but....)

Jesus (man or myth) and his actions (fact or fiction) HAVE made the world a better place.
I don't think anyone intelligent would have a dig at Jesus himself.
It is the religions BASED on Jesus - their lies and atrocities that are deplorable and wrong. The crusades were supposedly carried out in his name!
I guess it comes down to the white lie/black lie thing. Rahab lied and was commended in the Scriptures for doing so, as she did it to save lives. Yet others who lied for personal gain were smote down by God.
So I think it comes down to commonsense...which is somewhat lacking in most people!

Interesting. I'm sure if you took all the lies ever told and had a clear picture on whether or not that lie that more good then bad, you'd get a lot of overall good lies.
Does this mean we should lie? Don't we? I'm honest, but something things are better left unsaid.
The flip side of the Jesus coin is all the bad things done in His (and using your scenario) many other God's names.

I agree to a point. It has helped many, but it has also caused many deaths.
BTW: it is spelled lying...whenever a word is -i and you want to put ing at the end, the i becomes a Y...
sorry, don't mean to offend. Just thought people would like to know ex:
not: lieing, liing...lying
not: vieing, viing...vying

I honestly don't think that the small goods outweigh the horrific bads. Think Crusades, Inquisition, witch trials, etc.
They may have been caused by what Christianity has become and not anything Jesus said or did (even if a lie) but they were still done in his name.

If he was a lie then at least 12 men were willing to be beaten and die for something that they know was a lie. Does this not sound realistic or rational. As to the idea of a lie I believe Goebbels said that if you said one long enough, often enough and loud enough it would be considered the truth. Actually I was referring to Peter, John, james and the other disciples who were eyewitnesses. They could have just have said "no we made it up" and gone home. It is one thing to believe something is true it is another to be an eyewitness. They were eyewitnesses to what happened and died rather than say it was a lie. Many are willing to die for what they believe to be true Who is willing to die for what they know to be a lie? These men made that sacrifice They wouldn't do it for a lie.

Yeah, I was going to say. It would be selective accounting of the highest order to think Jesus was a benefit. He was no benefit to those pregnant women and children he whipped with a whip made out of cords when he was causing a ruckus in the Outer Temple. (Back then, moneychangers and the sellers of doves were all family businesses, and the family helped out, so no doubt Jesus' blows landed on pregnant women and children too.)

An interesting thought but to fully flesh it out you have to consider all the evil that has been done in the name of Jesus. This is a sword that cuts both ways.
100 points for creative thinking, but it doesn't prove anything one way or the other IMHO.

Christ's existence is well shown in numerous historical documents. It is also an easy statement he was a man. Now was he also the Messiah, Savior and a God. Yes, and that is where faith comes in. Some believe, some know, some doubt.

Oh you Christians LOVE to assume this world is better because of you don't you?
You conveniently forgot to mention the wars, like the crusades and the Spanish Inquisition.
The old barbaric traditions like witch hunting and beating women.
And in modern times, prosecution of EVERYONE who is different. Atheists, Gays, Muslims, Jews, its just a big hate fest of oppression because we dont all believe in your little fairy tale.

more good than bad? the crusades, the third reich, the KKK, the burning times, all inspired by Christianity long after the supposed coming of christ--what good have they done? destroying history, cultures, burning books, forcing the starving to give up their traditions in exchange for food,--inducing smallpox to the indigenous tribes of the united states and mexico in order to wipe out the "heathens" who came before them--you're right, your question isn't very well thought out
