Let me start out by saying that I support capital punishment.

I don't think we should make executions public. Executions are not joyous or celebratory occasions. They're somber and fairly depressing. The person being executed destroyed many people's lives. That's not something to be excited about or watched with blood lust.

I believe that there would be some benefits gained by making executions public. It was always done like that in the past. Put the execution on every television and radio station and have every major news agency do a simulcast on the web. You don't have to watch, but it would be kind of hard to avoid seeing it. And you don't do it forever...just until the criminal element of this country realizes that our legal system means business when it comes to prosecution and carrying out sentences.

Never! Never! Never! It's enough to know that it happens and it is a very sad thing when it does. But what is even sadder is the commission of the crimes that got them into that place. I wish capitol punishment were a real deterrent to crime, but it hasn't actually happened in the history of mankind. However, some crimes are so horrific, that the only worthwhile punishment is the death penalty.

Yup. And they should be televised- too. At 12 noon, every Saturday, a scheduled execution could take place outside of a State's capitol building. Tickets could be sold to whoever wanted to see it in person (there could be "box seats" for the victims family members)- and the media could come & watch them- free of charge. Otherwise, you could watch it on commercial TV-after a pre-execution round-up. ... And if the people had any objection to this arrangement... -then maybe they should reconsider the concept of Capitol Punishment ALTOGETHER. It's time we got our heads up out of the sand on this issue. Our hypocracy in this Country - is a DISGRACE.

I think if we were to start public hangings again and everyone got to watch, it would act as a deterrent to a lot of the crime committed.

Capital punishment should be banned, but if this continues, it should be made public and shown on TV. This way, everyone can see how brutal it is.

Absolutely. And for some of them it should be extremely painful and horrific. Just 'going to sleep' is not punishment fitting for some crimes.

No, this isn't the 10th century and it sure as hell isn't modern day Saudi Arabia.
