I'm 17 right now. Idk how anything works but I want to be a marine, instead of joining the National Guard. What goes on?

If you want to be a Marine, then why don't you want to go to war? Why don't you want to go to Iraq? It would be a part of your job description. That is like wanting to be a police officer, but not wanting to go out into the street to do your job.

If you fear death and if you fear going to war (Iraq), then don't join the Marines. They do not want someone who doesn't want to serve. They only want the few who actually want to go to war and risk their lives every day (hence the phrase "the few the proud").

If you join the Marines and if by some odd chance you're not sent to Iraq, do know that 5-10 years down the road, there is a great possiblity that the United States will be involved in another war. The Marines aren't something you can just leave whenever there is a war taking place. It's a way of life. And if you don't want war to be a part of your life, don't join the Marines.

We are a nation at war. Any individual considering joining the Marines or any branch of the service MUST realize that by signing on the dotted line and taking the oath, you are saying yes to deployments. If you do not want to be deployed into a war zone then do NOT join the military.

As a marine you have about a 50% chance of being stationed in Iraq, about a 40% chance of sea-duty and about a 10% chance of ending up somewhere else (embassy duty, training post, etc).

If you want to get to Iraq, your best bet is to join the Army. All of their divisions are rotating through so if you don't get there on your initial assignment, you will get there in a year or two.

Ex Army here. First off you would need to be 18 to even enlist or have your parents sign for you. The chance of anyone going to Iraq now are very hard, at most times soldiers are heading out as soon as they get to permanent party (Stationed.) Marine Corps are always sent more often than any other branch of service. If you are really interested in getting into the service and don't want to go to Iraq/limit your chances of going get into something like Laundry & Bath specialists, kinda hard to wash sheets in the desert right?

My brother spent a good 3 years out of 4 in some God-forsaken middle-of-nowhere ***hole in Iraq and Afgahn...but it will still depend on your job. The Marines, just like every service, have those very-few jobs that are not deployable. I commend you for wanting to join, just make sure you think long and hard about it. Being a Marine is a dangerous gig and it has to be something you want badly. Best of luck! :)

Pretty good chances in the Army (including Guard and Reserve) as well as the Marine Corps.

Decent chances in the AF. Pretty low for the Navy.

your chances are much higher in the national guard.

my brother is army NG and he's had 3 tours!! a year at a time.. webeen in the same time.. there more NG percentage there then marines. chances are you'll be in the pacific if you go active marines.. i was out in okinawa most the time, with deployments to phillipines and thailand.. even australia..

you need to wake up. The marines is not a social club. The marines are the first branch of the service to set foot on foreign soil in times of combat not counting special forces. what do you think you will doing in the marines? They do not knit sweaters in the marines they kill people and are usually better at hand to hand combat than sailors or air force or army.

i think you should join the marines because they will wake you up pretty good

Thank you for wanting to serve our country. You'll probably end up in Iraq. Why don't you go Coast Guard instead. Military benefits, stay closer to home. Why do you want to be a marine?

Whether you join the Marines or National Guard, it is very likely you will be sent to Iraq. You should not risk your life to fight in a war fought for the sole purpose of benefiting the rich and big oil. Don't be a pawn for the Bush Crime Family. If you are using this to get a free education, you'd be better off taking out student loans and working while in college. Otherwise you may be dead or missing limbs. Why take a chance?
