Laguna beach is great and has many good restaurants and hotels. There is a new park with beach front cottages at Crystal Cove between Laguna and Corona Del Mar. very cool. Santa Barbara is a great weekend spot to visit. Palm Springs, Pala Indian Casino, The mountains of Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead. Personally, I think that I would pick laguna Beach. its got it all and is centrally located on the coast. The beach is great and it just plain works.

Carpinteria/Santa Barbara
San Diego
Las Vegas (October - May, it's too hot now)
I like taking the train to SD or SB, then just walking about town. Both towns have hotels within walkind distance. Carpinteria is a nice little beach town about 12 miles this side of SB, where you can hang out at the beach.
