The reason we take it so literally is because we have faith. Without that we wouldn't even believe that God exist.
Now tell me why it would be impossible for a man to build a ark to put two creatures of each in it, or how a man parted a sea, or how a man could come back from the dead.
Six hundred years ago the world was believed to be flat, yet a man took a leap of faith and proved that it wasn't. One hundred years ago it was believed in possible to brake the sound barrier.
That is technological, but what your talking about divine. So if, which I do believe, God exist why could those things not happen?

I love how they think that the story of Noah's ark is factual, when it's nothing but a rip-off of the Epic of Gilgamesh.
The great flood from the Epic of Gilgamesh if from 2700 BC, and pretty much the same thing happens. Gods get angry, they make a flood, get a giant boat and fill it with animals, and survive.
The only difference is that the Epic of Gilgamesh was never told to be a factual story, it was a myth from the very beginning.
Christians are dumb to think that their knock-off story is factual, just because it's written in some lame book.

You don't believe,,that's your right,,,but I and others, millions,,,do believe,,,can't you accept that? The Bible is a true story of the life of Adam and Eve, Noah, King David, and many more people. Some of which are actually in other History books,,,The life and Crucifixion of Jesus is also in other history books. Its our HOLY BOOK,,have some respect,,please.

Christians take the Bible literally because they are taught from the cradle that to do otherwise is tantamount to listening to the devil and turning away from God and risking their immortal souls to eternal hell fire and torture.
These are threats that stay with a person if they are too afraid to break away and see the truth. They are afraid NOT to take the Bible literally. It's sad.

Because we have what you do not understand---Faith and trust in a LITERAL God who created us and gave all of us a void. We christians fill our void with Truth which is only found in Jesus and the Holy literal Word of God. You cannot understand what you do not have--The Holy Spirit living in you to give you understanding of God's Word. We are all born spiritually dead (in sin) and need Jesus' redemption so that we are made spiritually alive. You who have no Holy Spirit to guide you and give you understanding, thinks God's Word is foolishness. Faith has eyes that can see, minds that understand and hearts that are open to God/Jesus and His Word. God bless

Ah, you know the answer to this. Voluntary blinders. They're scared that if they admit that parts of it might not be true, they might have to consider that the whole thing is not true. So, the answer to this dilemma is, shut out all reason where the bible is concerned.

Because when Martin Luther said that the common man could interpret the Bible for himself he overlooked the fact that their interpretations would be just that, common.
