This is more than one question because it addresses several sides to a multi-faceted issue.
Why do we need immigration reform?
For the first time in the history of the United States, Americans are concerned about who is coming into our country. Since September 11th it has become all too apparent that our open border policy was a huge national security risk. If you look at European countries all of them control their borders as a matter of course. We prided ourselves on being so loved by the world that we didn't need to do that. We were wrong. We know now that we need to know who is in our country and why.
Air travel is easy, we always had Customs, we just beefed up protocal and security. Ports likewise were easy. The Canadian border was the easiest because the Canadians already had secured it. The Mexican border became the problem.
To some extent we do "need" the labor brought in from illegal immigrants, largely Mexican in nationality, but from other countries as well. I know, from personal experience, that if construction companies stopped hiring illegal immigrants here in Arizona, they would have no laborers, and very few framers. There simply aren't many Americans willing to hump lumber in 115 degree heat for 12 hours a day. Interesting to note, these guys still make comparable wages to the Americans that do work for these companies at a peer level. The common misconception is that these guys are paid under the table for less money and that is simply not true. Most of these guys average anywhere from 12-20 dollars per hour. The ones that head their own crews make more.
However there are other industries that do have Americans applying for jobs that they have to compete with an immigrant for. The restaurant hospitality industry is a great example of this. Even if an American is not vying directly for a dishwashing, cook or busser job, now managers face the added challenge of not being bilingual in a position that did not used to require it, but now does because the staff is generally Spanish speaking. So a bilingual illegal immigrant makes the cut and the American manger with 10 years experience can't find a job.
So yes we do need some of the workers, however, it needs to be regulated, the US has to close the Mexican border as a matter of national security, and we need to decide who gets to stay, why, how do we get them documented, or how do we get them to leave.
This only touches on a couple of the issues you alluded to.
There are other reasons why this is a problem for US citizens. Healthcare in our country is suffering because illegal immigrants flood our ER's instead of going to the doctor because they can not pay and they know that a doctor would turn them away whereas a hospital is obliged to treat them. Meanwhile there are American citizens going without any healthcare because they can't afford it, and must play by the rules as a documented citizen. We can't just indulge ourselves to free healthcare, and until we get that fixed we shouldn't be spending our resources on non-citizens. A government has the responsibility to do its best by its citizens, therefore the status quo has to change.
The main point is: we need to do a head count here in the US. We need to make sure that everyone in the US has a legal right to be here. We need to secure our borders to make certain it stays that way. Likewise we need to decide upon what criteria and under what rules and status do illegal immigrants get to stay or go. The important thing to remember, is that this is the USA, and we have to do what is best for the USA and its citizens.
We do not need to do our best by illegal immigrants, they have broken our laws and have taken advantage of our hospitality. Illegal immigrants have no rights here in America because they are not Americans. They all have their own countries that they have some allegiance to. If they don't have rights in their home countries, they should be fighting for their rights back home, not wasting their time here.

The illegal immigrants in the United States are here working jobs that most Americans do not want. These immigrants are trying to earn money to send back home to their families. There needs to be control over how many immigrants are let into the country and how many are here. Immigrant reforms would control this and still allow foreigners in the country for a set amount of time.

Because for years, the people who came to America, my family included, did so by the rules. When we came to this country, we learned English, because when we went to school, you had your lessons in English, not the language of your choice. And then you got a job and contributed to society. It's unfair that others come into certain sections of our country and set up shop as if they were still in their own country. Go to certain sections of New York, Florida, and California and there are areas where there aren't even any store signs that use the English language. I don't care if people from Central America want to come to our country, as long as they follow the rules and wait their turn like everyone else.

We don't need illegals. We don't need immigration reform. We don't owe illegals one darned thing except a jail sentence, seizure of their assets, and deportation. We have plenty of laws on the books today that if enforced, they would stop the illegal immigration in its tracks. This proposed bill is nothing more than a sham to buy time for the illegals to multiply again and again and again until there is no USA and no borders. We are on the verge of a Civil War and our government is the chief cause of it because of its failure to enforce our laws and its unequal treatment -- preferential treatment to illegal aliens and their supporters while punishing law-abiding citizens.

The world today is different. We cannot afford to have open borders anymore. Sadly, among those who come here for the right reasons, are gang members, smugglers of drugs and people, terrorists and others with criminal intentions.
We must control who crosses our borders, and screen everyone who comes here. We lack the will to enforce our immigration laws because we want to be PC.
I don't believe we should punish those who came here illegally just because we didn't do the job of enforcing our laws. Many illegals are great people and should be citizens. Many who come here legally, like students from countries that support terrorism, are here to harm us.
So we need to secure the borders, seek out good candidates for citizenship or residence, and keep the undesirables out.
But keep the good people here, whether they arrived legally or not.
