If you're worried about deploying or don't want to deploy, then don't join. That sounds harsh, but think about, it IS the military. They primary mission is to fight and win wars.
That aside, some of it can be handled by career field. You might still deploy but there's a difference between running the remote personnel office in Iraq and being infantry in Iraq. So, get an administrative career field.
The best ways not to deploy or make deployment a little easier would be...
1. Join the Coast Guard instead of the Army.
2. Join the Navy or Air Force instead of the Army.
3. Get a desk job (admin, computers, whatever).
4. Get a medical job.
5. Get a maintenance job on aircraft (aircraft always return to relatively remote bases and so that's where you'd be at).
Despite what your recruiter will tell you, if you haven't boarded the plane to head off to Boot Camp yet, then it's not too late to switch branches or not join at all. They'll make it sound like your stuck because you signed whatever piece of paper. That's just BS. They don't consider it AWOL or desertion until you've taken your final Oath of Enlistment and arrived at Boot Camp.

You aint gonna see squat. Less than 5% of deployed troops will ever see combat. Most of which is in the form of IEDs. Meaning you aint fighting, youre just dying. Ammo specialists will never leave the FOB. Your job is to inventory/maintain the war load for your unit and issue out ammunition when it is requested. You also will deploy when your assigned UNIT deploys. Meaning likely NOT right after AIT. Im sure you were told that you would be deployable following AIT and took that to mean you are going immediately. Well you won't be.

Yep for the most part you are going to deploy especially with the army.
I know 3rd Division is on their 3rd rotation and looks like there will be more (they have done the most rotations than any other Division).
And almost every MOS is being deployed.
So it just depends on where you go and are stationed at. Cause almost every post can get deployed.

Pretty much everyone is deploying now, especially division/brigade level units. Lowest risk of deploying would be with a BSB/Garrison command in Germany

that kind of information isn't going to be available. OPTEMPO depends on too many factors that change just about daily.
Far better to assuem that wherever you end up, you WILL deploy at some point. That way, if it doesn't happen during your tour, you will be pleasantly surprised, and if it does, not a huge shock.

If you don't want to be OCONUS, you're sorta outta luck. You go every other tour.
If you don't want to go Iraq, your best bet is the navy. They sit out in the Gulf mostly. Not even the AF is immune from the combat zone anymore, even if less likely than the Army and Marines. Either of them and you'll find yourself with combat experience.
If you're scared say your scared!

US third infantry :)
MANY don't deploy as many of them are kept in the US for traditional uses such as sentinels at the tomb of the unknowns (my ideal job) and for other uses in parades/honor guard ceremonies
