Whenever I look in the religion section of yahoo answers, I always find huge numbers of people that claim there is no god. If most people in the US are somehow religious, then why are so many users of this site atheists. Is the statistic wrong? are they lying about it or trying to be "rebels"? or is something else causing this odd ratio?

Many people here say that because not everyone is from the US, there are fewer religious people here. Well, the same statistic applies to almost the entire world. only 16% of the world's people are non-religious

I think that Atheists come from the thinkers and philosophers. The people who would be asking questions and looking for answers. Personally, I really do think that's the reason, but can't be sure.

Also, I think there are far more closeted Atheists in the USA then most people realize.

You need to look at the entire population. Christians are busy answering questions in scientific and non-sectarian sections, such as philosophy, emigration, anthropology, and mathematics, to name a few.

Theists ask for answers from atheists in the religion section far more often than an anyone asks for the biblical "theory" in the non-sectarian section. Clearly atheists are being welcomed to that section as a group so that "athiest" opinions may be received as requested.

On the other hand, it is the scientific sites that find the amount of theist involvement disporportionate. The amount of unwelcome religious opinion expressed in scientific sites indicates that the balance of population you seek are residing in sites that have little interest in their input.

Because (1) this is an international site (2) there are not a lot of Christians on here (3) Atheists have a vested interest in keeping the Christians from putting their religious rules into the law books. Plus, since atheists don't have a natural community to gather in, many of us have used this forum to meet other atheists. Christians have no trouble finding other Christians.

There is also a disproportionate amount of fundies... People who have stronger opinions on these things are more likely to take an active roll in discussing and asking questions about them than those in more moderate roles that don't really question things....

Well, that and well, this is the internet.... And internet culture leans towards atheism, libertarianism, and technophilia... As on the internet you're more likely to encounter products of internet culture than elsewhere, obviously there are going to be a few more atheists visible.

Sometimes, I have felt the same way you do. But, then I remember that this is a site only and this is a "free" society! So, you have to remember that the atheists would be in this "topic area", because they have to give disclaimers where they think it counts. Who else would care?

Now, having said that, as a Christian, I also remember that Jesus said it would be this way! So, I do not hate atheists and I do not call them names! I simply try not to get confrontational as we would never agree.

Funny... I'm seeing about equal religion and non-religion folks here. There WERE more religious folk (mostly Christians) but they couldn't back up their outlandish fairy tales with facts and have since left.

At least freethought and facts seem to be getting more exposure HERE than elsewhere on the web, which is frighteningly Christian these days.

I don't know, but as an atheist that rather enjoys this section... I feel its important to help society for the better, and to hopefully give Christians something to think about.

We all decided at the last baby barbeque, in between the puppy-kicking competition and the plotting to keep "God out of schools," that we'd like to bug the theists on Yahoo!Answers.

Clearly, our plan is working.

The overlord will be pleased.

It may be that they feel more secure in a group. I mean if you have to defend a lie, the more supporters you can find, the more comfortable you feel about it. In addition, I think many of them here are not truly atheists, but just do it for fun of upsetting the theistic group, which does not show them in very favorable light.
