yep its very hard to go up to someone you dont know and start a conversation especially when your shy, but the most important thing is not caring what others think of you

Talk about what you know about. I personally take pride in knowing about just a few things: music, movies, watches, and the weather. I work in retail at a watch store, I'm a music major, and I like watching movies. As for the weather, everybody's always got something to say about the weather. It's not something you want to open the conversation with, but it's kind of like your fail safe if you find yourself reaching that awkward silence.
I find that the best way to begin interacting with people you don't know is to observe them first. Take a look at how they hold themselves, how they are dressed (are they wearing expensive clothes, or shorts and a t-shirt?) and who else they are interacting with. Five minutes of observation should be enough to tell you a lot about a person. I can say that having practiced that for quite some time, it may take you more or less time.
The next step after observation is to comment on an observation that you made. If you see that they are wearing an expensive looking watch (something I always pay attention to these days) then ask "Hey, where'd you get that Tag Heuer? I hear Brad Pitt and Tiger Woods both wear Tag." Maybe not something you'd say, but if I saw somebody wearing a 1500 dollar watch, I'd say something!
And the most important thing: practice. Do it over and over. Find out what works for you and what doesn't. If you come up with a ploy or a pickup line that gets you the cold shoulder, then brother, don't do that no more! Just about everybody loves some kind of music and some genre of movie, so if you know at least a little something about those things, you're in good shape man.
