In sweden, atheists and agnostics make up 90% of the population. Church attendance is less than 10%. So many Christians love to claim that atheistic beliefs will create nothing but communism because of Joseph Stalin. Well guess what, Sweden is a democracy. They vote on laws, they vote for their leaders, and they have a public school system like America. Sweden has one of the lowest crime rates of any developed nation in the world. They get higher scores in Math and Science then Americans do. I couldn't find a more perfect example of how atheistic beliefs can form a peaceful way of life while at the same time promoting freedom. I recently took a vacation to Sweden with my parents so you can probably sense my enthusiasm.

I am Swedish and yes, our religious beliefs are vague, held with low intensity, and the level of nonbelief is high; religious authorities have little, if not any influence on public opinion and policy. Maybe it is because, for many Swedes, the church and its ideas feel somehow too authoritarian, and that is a thing we do not like. Everything works fine if tolerate, trust and respect other people.
My husband was baptized in the Svenska Kyrka (Lutheran church) but has never attended services or church activities. In fact, he, as many other Swedes, is leaving the church to avoid paying taxes.
...and for the girl who asked if Sweden was famours for its chocolate... you are probably confusing Sweden with Switzerland. That really bothers many people here.

The only thing I don't like about Sweden is the weather. It's a bit cold for me. I also think maybe I have seasonal affective disorder, and those long winter nights would not be good for my psyche.

Assuming that non-Christians are complete animals is what Christians like to believe. It makes them feel fuzzy and warm inside.
