I don't think they really understand the concept of eternity.

For the same reason the so called non religious ask questions in the religion category. They know on some level there is more, the mind searches for answers beyond the knowledge needed to just live a single lifetime. If you truly knew or believed there was nothing more, your brain wouldn't waste time and effort on those questions. Every time you pass a gas station, your brain doesn't ask if you would like to drink some gas, because you long ago convinced your brain that would be detrimental to your health, so the thought never enters your mind. However you can't escape these questions of what's next, because your not convinced yourself, like all others who claim death is the end. They seek answers hoping and praying they are wrong, and their brain agrees with them and continues to ask.
As for me ,I won;t be imprisoned but rather freed into a superior existence, that's the promise.

Most people want to live a long time and life is so short.
Our belief is that we will live on after death. There is promise that existence in the after life will be better than it is here.
Be that it may, If you do believe in eternity, you certainly don't have a choice. Belief will not make a difference. If you put your head in a hole in the sand and pretend the sky does not exist. You will find that when you pull your head out the sky will still be there. God does not die. We have the spirit of God within us and it is eternally spiritual. Our body dies because this dimension is only temporary. Some people may not like to live because their life is a pit of dispare. You will still have to Live again be it in a heavenly zone or where ever. So why not make the best of it if you have no choice. I personally want to live as long as I can as long as I am not bed fast and can still think. I enjoy life and it's challenges to learn from, but I'm getting old enough now, that I want to have it easier for a while.

Um not sure we have a choice to not exist or to exist. We may just be. What do you think gives us purpose. I mean computers they have data also but no purpose in them to guide them except our purpose. There is the possibility that the thing that purpose is may not be able to be destroyed. dunno for sure and then again only God would know it seems. that also kinda gives an interesting perception to people who don't believe animals have a spirit. The do seem to have purpose that guides their actions. If there is a God and he judges us by our purpose we assign our selves in life and accepting his way out of the enemies trap (garden of eden) then what we do in this life will have a real impact on the next life. People make lots of assumptions but the thing to consider is if there is life after this they may be connected. P.S. Death is not to fear when you know God personaly and know the salvation of Jesus. He gives you peace and as you learn about God and move away from Mans legalism you become free and realize there is nothing to fear about the next life and enjoy what God has given them and share their experience with others. No one has to accept it. Its their choice.

Because of their own naive insecurity - death is the only sure thing, the only unsure thing is anything after it, hence something great and wonderful must happen for it makes them secure and lightens the burden of death.

Death is final, what happens after it has no consequence on the life you lead now - rather than worry they should live life as carefree as the wind.

Many religious people believe the fairy tale that there is a heaven, and that's why they're sweating whether they'll make it to heaven or they believe the other scary story, that they'll go to the fiery depths.

What I can't understand is why so many of them are terrified of death, unless they really : aren't sure if heaven exists or aren't sure if they're "worthy" of heaven.

I hope for the ole dust to dust after death, since eternity sounds horrifying--who'd want to do anything, even heaven, for an eternity, even if it existed? An eternity could turn anything you loved into hell, if you had to do it forever.

Because God said that we can't even begin to imagine the wonderful things in Heaven that He has prepared for those of us who love Him. Eternal life with Him is not a prison, by any means. . .it's going to be pure joy and delight!

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Well, if we (in the hereafter) are living under God's righteous rule, with the devil and his boyz gone, and He puts his spirit and laws into our hearts and minds like He says he's going to do, maybe we won't feel imprisoned.
And what are we going to be doing billions and trillions of years from now? I have faith in God that he has things in mind to keep us busy and happy.

Imprisoned? I would hardly call being infinitely happy in an infinite universe with my family and friends imprisoned.

We believe that this is God's plan for us.
He didn't just give us a short painful life on this tiny planet.
There's a whole great universe out there to explore.
But we can't do it weighted down by physical bodies.
