"What will he give in exchange for a life beyond the grave?"

Well that's the whole point isn't it? If a person can convince them self that there is no life beyond the grave then they can continue in their own mind to be their own "god" who has the right to determine what type of behavior and what priorities should be followed. They can stay in their sins and claim that no one has the right to judge their actions because we are all just a cosmic accident with one shot at life and there is no divine purpose for our being here. That's what Jesus was talking about in this passage.

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God."

Because there are many who do not share your belief that the Bible is meant to be taken literally. Some believe it is a collection of allegories and examples about the best way to treat others, etc. And it always confuses me when people call it the 'word of God'. I mean, we know it was written by Moses, Paul, Mark, etc. They were humans, no? And as humans, imperfect? They lived in a time period before archaeology, carbon dating, astronomy, etc.

I shall give you nothing.

For as long as my ideals hold true, and I pass onto mankind even a single logical, coherent theory that will benefit generations to come, my life has not been wasted.

For my name will live on in their hearts, and I shall be remembered for all of time - that is the true afterlife.

Are you suggesting we should just believe in what the bible says, because there's no "profit" in trying to get to the truth of the matter? Wow!

Knowledge of reality.

If Science makes your god's word look like a word of an 8 year old dumb kid, it's not our fault.

Stop being pitiful and accept the reality.

If god created the world in seven days, he wouldn't plant false evidence. Evolution imparts knowledge.
