Sometimes, if you are flying on an airline that you are a member of (ie frequent flyer for American Airlines, Delta), you can ask about upgrades. Sometimes they are free, to move up to an exit row. My husband and I would ALWAYS offer to sit there, especially on longer flights! Most people were glad to let us sit there, but now almost everyone knows the secret!
You can get an upgrade at a low price if you ask in advance. I am not sure of what their rules are, but look at the websites AND CALL THE AIRLINE DIRECTLY. 9 times out of 10 they would love to work with you, especially for long distance and repeat customers!
If all else fails, ask the airline men and women if they would upgrade you. I had the pleasure once to have this happen, since someone actually had my same seat. The plane was VERY CROWDED from NY to ATL, and the man was crazy histerical, wanting to sit in the seat. The lady was so kind to me, and offered me another seat, towards the front...we walked right into business class, and that guy was not happy! :)
Kindness can go a long way!
Try online websites too, such as kayak.com, expedia, cheap flights, or even priceline...you can name your price and what you want. Plus, you can have "price breakers" send you emails or updates of when your favorite picks drop to a certain price.

Hope this helps, best of luck and happy flying!

You can get escape hatch seating but you can't book it in advance. They have to see you to make sure that you could help out in an emergency. So show up realy early and ask for the emergency escape row. But you do end up with nice leg room. Sometimes on the bigger planes the window seat has the inflatable escape ramp that partially blocks your leg room. Its still not bad and that is the best way to go if you don't have the extra cash.

I, like you are am tall, I always ask for an exit row seat, if you get to the Airport way early you can usually score one.
Upgrades are really tough these days, unless you know someone.
If you have miles it is sometimes worth it.
Check e-bay, air travel...tickets, sometimes you can pick up certificates on there, but be very careful.

Expedia will charge a service fee:

Go here:

then find best price and find out what airline and book directly with that airline.
