He was just a little over a year old, and was a pekenise , shitzu, and pomi. The main bone that connects the pelvis bone and back was gone smashed. He was able to eat and drink a little still and looked ok, as long as he didnt move and stayed on the one side. He would try to move but would yelp real loud cause of the pain. But the vet said that it would cost 5000 or more of surgery to fix it and thats even if they could repair the one bone thats gone, which I can't seem to afford. Did I give up to easily?

From your description I think that euthanasia was an appropriate descision. Obviously his quality of life without the surgery was very poor. And even with surgery there is no guarentee that every thing would come out ok. With a fractured pelvis there are huge risks for nasty infections and internal organ damage aside from the bone fracture. Even if you did do the surgery, there could have been complications and he may have been in chronic pain the rest of his life. I'm sorry about your dog. Don't feel bad about the choice you had to make.

I'm so sorry for your loss--that was a terrible experience and yes, you did the right thing. Even if you had the $5,000 which is an astronomically ridiculous amount for a vet to ask for, there was a very good chance your dog would not be able to walk and he would be in a lot of pain.

In my lifetime, I have had to put to sleep 3 dogs--which I treated like my children and loved them more than them ----animals give unconditional love and ask for only attention and love in return--they don't talk back to you and never hold a grudge.........when the time is right,, and you'll know when, go to the shelter and save a life and adopt another pet.....your doggie would want you to.....

No, you didn't give up easily. Letting them go when you have to is the hardest thing you can do, but you do it because you love them and don't want them to suffer. This was a very serious injury and very expensive to fix. Even if you had a million dollars, there is no guarantee that an injury like that could have been fixed or the dog would have recovered. They can have nerve damage that may show up much later, leading to urine and stool incontinence. You let you boy go so he didn't have to live in terrible pain. Don't be hard on yourself.

I don't think you gave up too easily as its never an easy decision to have to put a pet down - had to put down my cat a few years so I understand the issues that you go through with that decision.
I believe that you have to do whats best for the animal, and if its in pain than you have to do the humane thing - my cat had kidney failure and she was in pain, we tried to help her a while and hoped she would get better but things only got worse.

I am so sorry what happened to your dog, never an easy thing to do what you did, but I truly believe it was best for you dog the way you explained the situation - got to put the animal 1st and if its in pain than do whats right by it.

I think you did the right thing. Even if you had paid for surgery there is no guarantee that your dog would have had a good outcome. Accidents happen. I'm very sorry for your loss. You didn't give up easily and I'm sure it was very difficult.

I'm sorry to hear that you had to put your dog to sleep.
However you did the right thing. Your dog would have went through a lot of pain even after you paid the price and life would have been troubling for you and your dog.
You did the right thing.

Don't beat yourself up with guilt. Your dog probably would have been in pain for the rest of his life, even if the surgery was successful, and even your vet questioned if it would be or not. You did your best for your dog. I'm sorry for your loss.

aww that's sad! you can't do anything about it now though, so try not to feel bad. 5000 dollars is a whole lot of money, and if you couldn't afford it, it sounds like you didn't have a choice. so don't feel bad, you probly didn't give up too easily

You did not give up too easily. Pets experience pain in much the same way we do - when it's excruciating, they wish somebody would put them our of their pain. You answered your pets wishes and did the right thing.
