Why don't you ask him what it is he would like to do to earn money. Then sit and talk about the pro's and the con's of each one until you find something that best suits him. Let's face it, everything we do with our kids and every decision we help them make is supposed to be a learning experience for them .. Later in life it isn't going to be realistic for him to say "Hey Dad where should I work" .. He will have to figure it out on his own based on the benefits of the job ... so start there. If the list looks something like this (for example)
McDonalds
Car Wash
Dog Walking
Making the bed
Mowing Lawns in the neighborhood
Then you would sit and say .. ok well McDonalds is probably not going to work because you are not old enough to have a job permit yet bla bla .. so let's cross that one off for now.
now ..Car Wash .. ok ..what will you need to start that business? Do you have all the tools necessary? (bucket ..hose...soap..cloths..towels..armor all bla bla) .. that might get pricey when you are just starting out ..let's see ...
Making the bed... Now do you really think that you are 'earning' a paycheck for doing something that is ultimately your responsibility to begin with? .. Probably not .. so let's cross that off .. Lawns .. well ..what will you need ? Do you have the tools (lawnmower etc) .. yes? ok ..great .. now who will you sell your service to? Do you know anyone who would rather pay you to do it than do it themselves? ...
I know this got a bit long for an example but that is what I would do with my son (who is also 13 by the way).
It will help him to figure out how to come to the conclusion himself and hopefully ultimately make the right decision rather than just jumping into something without thought or sometimes even worse ..just asking mom or dad for the answer.

Mowing lawns is a good job for a 13 year old, and also cleaning houses of neighbors and family members. I know, I know, most people think cleaning houses is a girl's job, but this will teach him that responsibility and will help out later in life with his wife.

mowing lawns, yard work
babysitting
helping neighbors clean their garage
dog walking
At thirteen he is too young to be legally employed (unless he is a special case...like an emancipated teen or something like that) so he should be looking for a service-related job he can do on a job-by-job basis
Another great option is a volunteer position with a local zoo, nature park or summer camp. He wouldn't make any money, but he would gain some valuable experiences

Well, he can get a paper route, can walk dogs like our 16 yr. old niece does... Mow yards if he's responsible enough...shovel sidewalks in the winter time... anything simple that doesn't require too much physical labor should be okay. Granted he wouldn't be able to get a job in a restaurant or anywhere they serve/make food or any industrial things...
Just some suggestions to talk with him about.

If he is good with kids, then let him babysit with some of the neighbor kids. He can also do some gardening and cleaning in the neighbors homes. I'm a thirteen year old girl and these jobs have made me so so much money! =)

At 13, he could probably do paper delivery or something like that. If he wants to earn some money - maybe have him help around home, or he could do stuff around the neighborhood like mow lawns or somethings.

get you a lawn mower, and just go around and ask if anyone would like their lawn cut for 25 dollars. or maybe a rake job, or cut some bushes any thing to do with yard work, old people like to get cheap help.
