My black lab of 8 years died suddenly in the middle of the night. At about midnight she was breathing heavily, shaking, and looked as if she had seen a ghost. By 5 in the morning she was dead. I was wondering how long to wait to get a new dog. Is there precautions for the new puppy I should take, or was it just something wrong with the previous dog? She was fine the whole day. We do not have any rat poisons either, and our yard is secure. I want to get a puppy as soon as possible. Can I? I'm over the grieving part. If it is unsure. When is the soonest possible time to get one?

Maybe you dog had a sudden stroke? A medical condition that was not obvious enough for you to notice? At 8 years she was definitly a senior but still it is a bit under the life expectancy.

I would not re-use anything of hers for a new dog as a precaution and I am sure by now you have thouroughly cleaned your house several times.

When to get a new dog depends entirely on you. Some people take a long time to get over the loss of a pet other cannot live without so adopting a new pet actually helps them along.

I would suggest you look at listing, visit a shelter or adoption fair, a dog show even ... and see if there is anyone you could just take home on the spot. If you want to get another dog do it. It's your choice.

Good Luck!

You are old enough Im sure to decide when your ready for a new dog. I think just because you want a new dog doesnt mean you dont love and miss the one that just died. (sorry to hear about by the way) But yea I think you should get another dog but thats just my opinion. No point in getting really upset maybe it was just her time. At least she is in a Happier place am i right!?

Oh and I'd hope you'd save a little puppy from the pound if you do get one! They need loving homes! :o(

You get a new puppy when you feel ready and if you're ready now, go for it.

Other than rat poison, dogs can die from drinking auto anti-freeze which smells sweet due to propylene glycol. Those are the main risks to make sure you don't have around. If your dog was able to roam free and visited someone who works on cars, that could be the problem.

No other dog will ever replace the one you lost. But there is no definate time you should "wait". You'll know when you feel ready. Then you'll find a puppy that will bring love and laughter back into your life. It won't be the same dog... but your old friend will always live in your heart and memory. Good luck, my friend. The new puppy will be a lucky dog!

The time for you to get a new dog depends on you. If you feel ready then go ahead. Every pet owner has a different length of grieving time. 8 yrs is not too young for a dog to die. Those of us that are lucky get a few more years. Good luck.

Only you can decide how long your grieving process is.. everyone is different. i know people who had to go the next weekend and look for a rep. breeder or at there local shelter to find their new friend, cause they couldn;t bare being without a dog. And i know some who are still grieving after 2 years and the thought of another dog, crushes them...
So only you can make that decision.

That is a personal choice and only you can decide if now is the right time to get a new puppy. If you do decide to get a new one I would suggest not getting one that looks like the other one. Maybe go for a blonde lab this time

More than likely anytime would be ok.
if your other dog was up to date on all it's shots then it may have had a stroke or heart attck and that would not be cntagious.
I would attempt to find a pup that has had two sets of shots so you would be fairly protected of it getting something.
