Left hand fork, right hand knife. I eat according to European tradition.

Under American tradition, you would hold your fork in your left hand and knife in your right hand. Then you would stop cutting, place the knife down, and use the fork in your right hand to eat.

Most of the answers are right about the difference between American and European standards for eating. Many Europeans think that their way is the ONLY way; however, think of this, which looks better, having a knife and fork in your hand as you put food in your mouth, or cutting and having only the fork in your hand.

I travel internationally a lot, and have learned to eat both ways, as some are snobs and are so rude as to question you if you eat like an American.

European style is fork in left hand, knife in right. Fork is used with tines down, and food to transported to the mouth with the tines down. American style is opposite, with fork in the right hand. But in this case, when cutting, the knife is in the right hand, and folk in the left, but, after lying the knife down, the fork is then transferred to the right hand.

Your right hand should have the knife
while your left hand should have the fork.

Left hand = Fork , Right Hand = Knife. No need to switch hands once you are done cutting. It's quite easy once you do it over and over.

You are absolutely right. The right hand is for knives, and the left one is for forks. I often use my right hand for the fork when I'm eating though, but only when I'm not in a restaurant. I don't know why you have to have a certain peice of silverware in one hand. Who would have thought of that? People don't have enough to do...

Right hand fork when you are eating. When you are cutting meat, the knife should be in your right hand.

knife goes with the right when you are cutting and then you pass your fork that was on the left to your right and then you eat.

European form says left for fork and right for knife. American tradition is right for fork (after cutting) and knife. So, really it depends on where you are and who you're with.
