My neice's wedding is next month, and I'd like to purchase something that I could wear again, like perhaps to work,or something. I found a nice pant suit, with a jacket that's got austrian crystals on it,quite elegant, but it's black. I thought it was ok in this day and age, however the woman at the dress store thought it was inappropriate.. Any feedback on this one?I believe her wedding is 3 pm

If your family is very traditional than it could be considered improper. You should try checking with other people that you know who are going to attend and ask what color they will be wearing. Then you will know if other people will wear black, so that you don't stand out or be the only person in black.

Probably not the very best choice, but in today's world, it would be acceptable. However, if you wish something you can use at a later date for work, etc. perhaps something a bit less dressy would be more appropriate Would you really wear Austrian crystals to work? There are absolutely stunning pastel pant suits, which could be worn open jacket to to wedding with a dressy, bare top, snazzy purse and shoes, and then worn later with a less dressy top, or even buttoned closed for work. Look for something in a crepe, or silk. Have a really fun day!

You wear what you want to the wedding. As long as you're not upstaging the bride, I say go for it. Was the woman at the dress store trying to sell you something different or more expensive? Was she an older woman? The focus will pretty much be on the bride. I just attendend a wedding on the 8th...It was full of "church folk", but some people were dressed up pretty fancy. I say it's up to you.

There are formal weddings in which the color black is worn. At a traditional wedding, as long as one isn't in the ceremony, it is acceptable to wear whatever color one chooses. Most people associated the color black with funerals as opposed to weddings, therefore they would find it unusual. It is certain that you won't be wearing the outfit you described to work. And, unless you go out more formally on a frequent basis, you would seldom wear it. In general, it is more acceptable for wedding guests to wear light colors, especially if the ceremony is held in the summer.

That suit sounds beautiful and quite appropriate. Lots of people wear black to weddings. If you're conerned, try dressing it up with some bright accessories like diamond earrings and a summery handbag.

If you're not in the wedding and not the mother of the bride, there is only 1 rule for attire. DO NOT wear white. More and more people wear black to weddings. If you are a traditionalist, it means you are mourning their union. If you are not (and they are not) go for it! I would buy either way - you can never have too much black!

I believe they have lightened up the rule on black at weddings. It is not as if you are the mother of the bride. As an aunt, you are just an honored guest. Go ahead and wear the pantsuit.

Ask the bride and groom if they would be comfortable with you wearing the dress and if the say yes then go ahead and wear but if the say no try to find something different

I thought black was a formal color. Maybe the lady wants to sell you something else.

It really all depends on the wedding and how traditional it is but in general, black is not a wedding guest color...
