When I was in High School I had an assignment in metal shop to weld a number of rifle bolts closed with an arch welder. I though the mask was too dark to see the small hole I need to weld so I just closed my eyes as I touched the rod and started welding.

That night I was rushed to the emergency room. I had burned my retinas. The arch went right through the lids.

Hope that answers your question.

Always wear a welders mask.

First of all, if you close your eyes while welding, how are you going to see what you're doing? Secondly, sparks from the weld can hit your eyelids and burn them. You should always, always wear protective eye gear when welding. It would be very foolhardy not to.

C'mon man, get a mask, or at least some goggles. I was a mech for years. Are your eyes really worth taking the risk/being cheap?
