We're never able to find any common ground in this section (usually), yet we all band together to "go after" Polls & Surveys.
Do you find this to be true in other areas of life? For example -- the brief unity that America found after 9/11 when we all came together in the spirit of fighting terrorism?
Is the only way for opposing groups to stop hating each is finding a completely different group to hate?

SuperAtheist -- I agree with you. Post 9/11 would have been a wonderful time to strengthen and build alliances among the global community. Instead, our wonderful president basically says, "Screw you guys, I'm going to Iraq." It really affected the entire world's view of the US.

Let's make an atheist-christian alliance, bobby, to rid the world of agnostics and their horrible apathy!
Of course, we don't have to kill them ... we could always just put them all on a spaceship and force them to watch "The Brain That Wouldn't Die", et al.
j/k ... I love the agnostics as well!

wolfeblayde -- Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten about the way everyone banded together in support of Debra. I agree, its much nicer when it happens that way. Its just too bad that it takes a sad situation to cause it.

Quite. The only thing that will bring about world peace will be an interstellar war. Short-lived, however - as we will be.
You may not have noticed, but the entire civilised world came together in goodwill and heartfelt sympathy with America after 9/11 - and that chimp in the White House just used all that emotion to start a ghastly war with the wrong people.

You should question authority, our media dictates what is important to us, and the government dictates what the media says, so when Bush says the same day we know who did this some bells should start ringing because they knew too soon. And taking over Iran really had nothing to do with terrorism. The whole event was a stage to steal oil from the Arabs and we talk about terrorism. We use our power to control other countries with boycotts. We are currently steal Iran's oil until we give the country back and using tax dollars to fund somebody getting rich. This was Pearl Harbor all over again and my believe is the Government actually knew before hand and did nothing. The facts prove this.
We are using the same tactics Marxism and communism did to change China and Hitler did in Germany to turn American people against homosexuals, O J Simpson, religions and Arabs.
One day it's Iran the next day it's Iraq and all of this after Vietnam, American leaders are doing exactly what it takes to send us down the road to hell as a Nation. We supplied the arms to Iran that they used to fight us what more needs to be said.
In many battles and wars we supply the arms to both sides

Based on the events of a couple of days ago, I think a much better way to unity is finding a common cause to support. People from every belief system and no belief system at all banded together to post messages of love and support for our own Debra M. and her husband, Tommy.
Everyone knew that our posts were probably going to be deleted and Violation Notices sent out, but it didn't matter. At least one person lost his account as a result, but his concern for our friend went beyond his own needs.
The problem with banding together to battle an enemy is that once the enemy is conquered, the group tends to turn on itself and tear itself apart. When people get together for mutual support and caring, they usually come away with a new respect for the others in the group.
That's the way I much prefer it.

Common enemy isn't even a surefire path to unity. Check Native American history there. They had one huge common enemy and they didn't find unity. There's a lot of such examples globally. Check out Iraq. They have a common enemy, the US, but who are they bombing? Each other. Yeah, there'll be brief banding together in the face of "evil," but note the word brief. It doesn't last. Does that count as unity? No. I don't think so because the distrust and dislike is still there.
No, we will never, ever find unity in humanity as it is.

why are conservatives your enemy, once you're a without a doubt open minded individual you might even see the choose for the numerous opposing perspectives which holds liberty at the same time in a rustic. you may desire to attempt analyzing some conservative advice - with an open suggestions and understand with out any ethnocentric concept that they are people in simple terms such as you.

I have considered the same thought just recently(though,"hate" is a bit strong, from my perspective)...
One good idea would be for the Christians and Atheists, for example,to gang up on the agnostics and wipe them off the face of the earth......(Just kidding, I love the agnostics too)

In my opinion, the only sure way to unity is that countries dissapear. No borders. No religion. And also for everyone to share with everyone else. But that's not likely to happen.
So, people of industrialized nations continue to stuff their guts, while 12 million children die every year of malnutrition and other diseases. It's pathetic!
No one person can do this.....it would take everyone to participate.

I think the muslims have pretty much filled the gap.
No one on here has a clue about the local news, how they get this far without reading it is beyond me.
Everything is love and kisses and peaceful in Iraq.
Guess what? Sucide blast kills 35 people who went shopping in town. that happens everyday guys.

It's the quickest and easiest way. We don't have to change anything about ourselves, we just band together against "them", then when the threat has passed, we can go back to hating each other.
