How come the muscles don't ache right after a workout? For example I did some leg exercises for 15 minutes like squats and lunges and some with weights and TWO days AFTERward I started to feel the aches. Anyone have an explanation?

something to do with lactic acid. that your muscles produce during... uh i just learned about this in bio before school ended and i already forgot.

The brain produces endorphins which are the body's natural pain-killers whenever the body experiences certain degrees of pain or tears to muscle fibers. Lactic acid builds up within muscles and is responsible for the feeling of fatigue after a long intense work-out. Even though lactic acid causes the muscle to feel fatigued, lactic acid also ensures that the electric signals from the brain to the muscle are facilitated as lactic acid builds up within the muscle. This allows for a longer work-out.

The pain that you feel days later come from the tears in muscle fibers that you have accumulated and they ensure that muscle fibers reattach themselves and capillaries that were broken reconnect forming a more efficient cardiovascular conduit.

I think these other answers are right. I hope you're warming up properly before working out and stretching a bit after your workouts. You need 5 to 10 minutes of cardio, at least, to warm up your muscles before strength training, and another 5 to 10 minutes of cardio to cool down after, then a little gentle stretching of the muscles you just worked. This should help a little with the soreness.

Muscle soreness is created by lactic acid build up in the muscle following distress. It takes time for that build up to occur. How often the muscle is used will determine the build up and recovery time.

My husband says that this is typical. It might be an internal thing. It takes time for the activity to get to your brain to let you know that you are sore?
