Larger planes fly faster most of the time besides for some of those really fast Private jets like the Citation X which flys a Mach .92. The 777 and 747-400 are some the fastest passenger planes out cruising at Mach .84

A smaller 50 pax regional jet actually travels slower than say "a regular airplane" does (the quotes are there cause all airplanes are regular airplanes to the airlines). It's more down to physics to explain why a RJ (regional jet) or smaller aircraft tend to seem to travel faster.

For one: lets get the data straight

Plane #1: An Embraer ERJ 145ER...seats around 50 passengers and has a cruising speed of 760 km/h.

Plane #2: A Boeing 747-400 the largest commercial plane currently flying (and don't you airbus/a380 people deny that cause the a380 isn't flying in revenue service yet) has a cruising speed of 938kmh!

The bigger planes fly faster than the regional jets...always, they have bigger engines afterall.

Now a RJ seems faster cause one: there's less to accelerate, less airplane, less people, less bags, less fuel. So it takes less thrust to throw this plane forward. Plus the smaller engines take less warming up to really push tin.

Two: more physics that just escaped my mind this second but ill get back to ya when it comes back....

That, and they only have to inspect and load 50 passengers and luggage rather than 250 passengers and luggage, mail, cargo, and animals.
