Depends on the customs officer. If you give them any reason to think they need too, they will. Just be honest with them and dont hesitate giving any answers.

With crossing the border for 20 years, on average more than twice a year, I have have my car completely searched once (and I recommend staying away from minor border crossing like the one that it took place in. Only go to 24 hour ones.) And they have looked in the trunk 4 times. Only once by Canadian border, 3 by American Border Agents. And my bags searched by customs when flying once.

They generally only look if they are suspicious. But you can't always avoid it. You can be ready for questions etc. But I noticed my car got searched more when it was getting a bit old.

We cross the border at least twice per month and our experience is the opposite of JuanB's. When we cross at a major crossing almost all the time our car is searched; when we cross at minor crossings almost never by the Canadians; sometimes by the Americans.

I cross the border nearly every day, and I have only been searched a few times. Usually, if they do, they just glance inside the car and trunk. They don't often check baggage, but it does happen, if they are suspicious for some reason or if there is an alert.

In most cases, you will drive right on through, but occasionally the computer will send you in for a random check.

Sometimes they do sometimes they do not. If you have nothing to hide from the border guards then chances are they will not stop you to have a an examination. If you do have something to hide then ypu will be asked to step aside with an agent and things may be examined. They do have scanners to scan entire vehicles. Just this weekend a truck was pulled over carrying 674 lbs of marijuana mixed in with the truck's cargo. They also have drug sniffing and bomb sniffing K9 dogs on duty.

Good citizens from many borders cross the borders on a daily basis with out incident.

(Canadians)We got the car stripped out last time. We think that they didn't believe that we had bought nothing outside the country.
