Bayonet training is not only a lesson for hand-to-hand combat but also to help the soldier have that killer attitude. It (hopefully) would help give the soldier that extra fortitude to face the enemy either when they are rushed in and is too close for safe firearms usage or when they ran out of ammo.

Technically, bayonet charging is out-of-date and most bayonet designs didn't keep up with the development of the firearms they are to be attached too. More often, bayonets serve as wire cutters or weights or some other purpose than what they were designed to be.

Bayonets were more imports when everyone had muskets and after one shot, you could kill the other guy while he was reloading. Of course a soldier could still run out of ammo, run all the way back to camp, dig the bayonet out of his foot locker, call in air support while he is there, run all the way back to the fight (totally forgetting to pick up some ammo while he is there) and then use the bayonet to dig through all the rubble from the airstrike.
