Take him and his closest friends out to dinner with you and your family. I would give him a ticket to any destination for the summer. Would he like a backpacking trip through Europe. Its very educational and would broaden his life experiences before college.

Whoa! Some of these ideas are really not good. Think about what kind of adult you want him to be. Then plan something along that line of thought. Maybe a really nice dinner out. Everyone can dress nicely and act like adults. (Wow, there's a novel idea!) Or a picnic with just a few friends, teens and adults, a family style thing with NO booze and NOTHING sex-oriented. (You may want to remind him that sex has some very serious side effects ranging from babies to awful diseases, and he might want to save that for s special lady and special times.)

I know that is traditional among kids just turning 18 to go out and buy porn. I don't know how christain you are, but keep that in mind he may be doing that in the next few days. As far as something special at 18 i really hated my mother just out of teenage angst. so i would have rather had her not buy me anything and let me go out and party, something i would have enjoyed was a day when she was just less strict. and let me choose something i wanted to do.

For 18, i think of a leap house is slightly too embarassing, yet right this is a tip. think of back once you have been 18 and think of of what you wanted, often. If that doesnt paintings, subtlely spend time with him and discover out his substantial and standard likes and dislike wish this works :)

buy a car
you can plan a party,
hand down a family heirloom,
buy him something that he has wanted,
if he is into sports- pay for a camp,
if he has a band he likes- buy him a concert ticket,
if he is going off to college- get him some stuff he will need,
if he is staying in the house- let him redecorate his room at your expense

If you really want him to enjoy it, throw a party for him and his friends. He will appreciate you trusting him with alcohol and everything...
Oh wait, whoops sorry I live in Canada and 18 means legal drinking age. Hmm, well I'm sure he'd still appreciate you letting him throw a house party. It's tough but the kids always love it. Good Luck!

take him on a rafting trip with oars.com. it will be great bonding and an adventure that he'll never forget.
ipods and parties are stupid! they just reinforce materialism and drinking & drugs.
