The fundamental beliefs of a Mormon is that the original church that Jesus founded was changed and that there were many false teachings.
They believe that through Joseph Smith, the Prophet, the original church was reestablished and all of the of the lost truths were restored.
Some of these truths include:
1. A prophet to lead the church
2. 12 Apostles to testify of Jesus Christ
3. Baptism by Immersion and the Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
4. God the Father and Jesus-Christ being one in purpose, but separate beings.
5. Authority from God is needed to perform baptisms and other religious activities (i.e. going to theology school is not the way to be an authorized servant of God.)
6. We lived with God as spirits before this life and that we came to earth to receive a body and were given free will to keep the commandments of God or not.
7. Jesus visited the American Continent after his resurrection in 34 AD and his teachings are recorded in the Book of Mormon - Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
8. Etc.
The name of the church is: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The term Latter-day Saints was only added to differentiate the Church of Jesus Christ in the last days from the original church established.
Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and our savior and redeemer and that only through faith on his name, and obedience to his commandments, can anyone be saved, that is return to live with God forever.
They believe the Jesus has not changed and continues to lead and direct the church by giving revelation and inspiration to the Prophet and apostles just as he did during the days of the bible.
Of course other "Christian" churches are quick to call the Mormons a cult, and the Mormons have been persecuted since 1830, even though America is (supposed to be) a land of religious liberty.
Persecution, however, is a sign of truth, not error:
2 Timothy 3:12: "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."

Other LDS people have answered this question really well. I only want to add that there are some major differences in what we believe compared to other Christian sects.
We don't believe in the Trinity. We believe that God, Christ and the Holy Ghost (spirit) are three distinct, separate beings. They work together to bring about their ultimate goal- to get all of us back to Them! We believe that both God and Christ have perfected, resurrected bodies of flesh and bone, that God created us in his own literal image, both body and spirit. This is what we call the Godhead. Look the term up in the bible, it is in there. We believe that Christ was the literal Son of God, sent to earth to be a teacher and a leader. He was sent to cleanse us all from sin, that includes Adam! So, we don't believe in the concept of original sin.
We believe that while Christ was alive, He set up the way He wanted His church run. We believe that because there were prophets and apostles called while Christ was on the earth, those are important. We have a prophet who leads the church. He is a man of God, and gets revelation, and inspiration on how to lead the church. Under him are apostles, 12 to be exact. The same number that existed when Christ was on the earth.
We believe in honoring not just the commandments, but the law of the land also. No, we don't practice polygamy anymore. That hasn't happened for over 100 years.
Most of what Mr. Peepers has said isn't true. He has twisted things to make them sound wrong, or things that are really not true at all. People how have either left the church, or have been excommunicated will take our beliefs and twist them, or totally make something up just to make the whole church sound bad.
We believe that everyone has a right to worship they way they see fit. We try to be tolerant to others, and to what they believe. You don't have to be the same religion, or believe the exact same thing I do to be seen as a good person, or to be called a Christian. We believe in brotherly love, and helping our neighbors. We tend to band together when there is an emergency or problem, and usually things get taken care of pretty fast, and with a lot of working together.
Here is a site that covers most of what we believe, and answers questions from non-lds people. It may help you understand things more. I hope all of these answers has helped you!! Feel free to email me if you have questions, or don't understand something that I wrote. I'll be glad to clarify!!

Whether a Mormon is a Christian or not depends completely upon what your definition of a Christian is. I would guess that the popular point of view is that Mormons are Christians. Mormons believe that the Bible was revealed by God and that God also made later revelation through more contemporary prophets. There is sort of a pope of the Mormon church, I think. He's supposed to be God's modern day spokesman. Other than that, they have their own peculiar set of doctrines and traditions which one can easily learn best by going to the LDS (Latter Day Saints) web site.

I'm Mormon.
God is my Father.
Jesus Christ is my savior and redeemer. He was born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, and died in Jerusalem. He lived a perfect and sinless life, suffered for my sins in Gethsemane, then died on the cross. 3 days later he was resurrected and overcame death that all men will be resurrected. Through the atonement of Jesus Christ, my sins can be washed away.
Now, I don't know if you'd call me a Christian or not, based on that, but that's what I believe.
Other beliefs that stand out are:
We believe that couples can be married for eternity and that the family is an eternal unit.
We believe that through most of the history of the world, God has called men to be prophets. He gave them authority to act in his name and to teach his word. Many wrote these words down, and are scripture to use. We believe the prophets in the Bible to have been God's chosen prophets. We also know that there have been prophets in the Americas, and we have some of those scriptures as well known as "The Book of Mormon".
There are 13 "Articles of Faith" that you might be interested in glancing at. Link below.
one last thought....
Mormons believe in Christ. The name of the church is "The Church of Jesus Christ". The book of Mormon is titled as "Another Testament of Jesus Christ". Our Chapels bear his name as do our temples. There are quite a few people in the "Christian" world that feel threatened by Mormons and as a result spread lots of lies, one of them is that we're not christian.
I know of no other church that says "Come take a look, learn a bit, thing about it, see what you think and feel about it, and then get on your knees and ask God if what is being taught is true". We sincerely hope that you will ask God to lead you to truth. Do so humbly, diligently, and sincerely, and God WILL lead you to find truth.
God is our father and cares deeply about each one of us. This I know to be true.

Yes they are Christians, but they are different than most Christians. They believe Christ is our savior, but do not believe in hell. They also believe that 1 or 2 a few of the 12 tribes went to North America and believe that upon the founding of America Jesus visited Joseph Smith to reveal all of this.

-Jesus was a man that did the same thing.
-salvation is available only to the Mormon church
-you have to recognize Joseph Smith as a prophet to gain salvation.

We believe We can only be saved through his infinite Atonement. we beleive that if we really love him we will keep his commandments... We believe he is the Light, the truth and the way. He is the cornoerstone of our religion.
All of our beliefs are only apendages to the Saviors birth, life, death and ressurection.

These are what we call our 13 articles of faith... This is basically an outline of what we believe.
http://lds.about.com/library/bl/primary/aa13_articles_of_faith.htm
If you will take the time to read them you will have your answer.
We are Christians... read the first article of faith. Others will claim we are not Christian and that somehow we believe in a "different" God or Christ. We use the Bible just like the everyone else. Look at the references under each article.
