They do require you have sufficient funds or access to sufficient funds to support yourself in the country. However, access with credit cards and access to you bank account like you state are generally fine. Also, they generally don't bother first world country citizens with such questions. They generally ask you occupation and see you are driving a car, then figure from there you have sufficient means. They are more likely to ask the other way around. The rule is if you are carrying over $10,000 you have to declare it and fill in paper work. Anti drug money laws...

I do recall awhile back. We were a bunch of University Students going into the US. A friend was a Foreign Student from the Philippians. The US border agent asked only him how much money he had. He turned us around and had to go back and find a bank machine so he could take out cash money. Ironically, HE was the richest of us all.

The Canuks will ask you what your purpose for visiting Canada is. Say "travel/vacation, eh?" You will be asked how much currency you have. Say "less than $200, U.S. eh?" they will ask you your destination. Say "Alaska, eh?"

If you try to enter the republic of Alaska, you will need a passport, and enough cash or credit (roughly $2000 - $3000) to buy gasoline and mosquito repellent.

Bon Voyage!
