Why do some countries have provinces and others have states?

Yeah, what is up with Cantons, Parishes, Prefectures, and the lot anyway. Can't them feriners use our language?

"province" is an old piece of British Imperial terminology which was still around at the time of Canada's confederation in 1867. The existing colonies were already called "provinces" and so the name was kept on. Elsewhere either the American usage (State) has been used or there is a word in the local language, e.g. Lander in Germany.

It all depends on the set up of the country and the system of Government they have.
