studying on my own. I need two years of a foreign language to graduate high school. Could I take a CLEP exam for if I pass it, I could by pass the hastle of taking a 2 full courses of french? So, I'd just take a CLEP exam and automatically get my 2 language credits I need to graduate high school?

Or are clep exams just for college students?

What are your thoughts?

THANKS!!!

Are you not getting the answer you want to hear? Is that why you keep asking this question? I've already answered once, but here goes:

I can find nothing in Florida's homeschool laws that requires you to have two years of foreign language to graduate. Many colleges *desire* their applicants to have two years of foreign language in high school, but most won't reject you just because you haven't had it. My high school only offered Spanish and I wanted to learn French, so I never took a iforeign language in high school and my college had no problem with it - I just took it there.

You might try CBE (Credit By Examination). Texas Tech Univ. offers this (you do not need to live in Texas to do this). It gets you accredited high school credits just by taking (and, of course, passing) the exam(s). They offer two years worth of French (two semesters each) at $30 each ($120 for all four semesters).

The previous answer was correct that CLEP is for college credit, not high school credit. And many colleges do not accept CLEP exams, they prefer AP exams.

I'm pretty sure that CLEP tests are only for college credits, especially since CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program. However, I don't think there's any requirements to take it other than paying for it. Say you are able to get one or two college class credits for it by just simply taking it, it would be worth it.

How is it that you need two years of a foreign language to graduate high school while being home schooled? Is this a state requirement or what? Is your home school program accredited through some agency? Perhaps you could contact them and see if passing CLEP exams could count towards high school credits.

Here's the link to CLEP testing just FYI:

I agree with Shelley G. If you're wondering how a HS'ed student gets into college with a parent-issued diploma, it's not hard. A diploma doesn't mean much. I didn't need it for college admissions (you apply before you even graduate anyway), haven't needed it for any job, and no one cares. Even when I moved to a new state and they wanted proof of age (I didn't realize I didn't have a certified copy of my birth certificate), they didn't ask for my diploma. They asked for my high school transcript. For some reason they wouldn't accept a much-more-professional-and valued college transcript. Anyway, to gain college entrance, the family makes a transcript as Shelley said. The student should also make a portfolio of their work, including a bibliography of what they've read, and should take the ACT and/or SAT tests. Armed with those, and possibly doing a personal interview, a HS'er can get into college - especially most state schools. You do not need to take the GED test to get a high school diploma when HS'ing. That just shows the bare minimum and most HS'ers do way more than that. As others have said, it usually *is* based on a credit system. Even if a student has "mix and matched" (self-study, online, co-op) courses, they can assign credit to each one. They can also calculate a GPA that way. Many HS'ers also attend community college in high school to earn dual credit - credit for high school and college at the same time. Then the full-time college admissions process is even easier, as many enter FT as sophomores or juniors. You could easily earn an AA degree while still high school age. As for graduation, some students have private celebrations, some have a ceremony with other HS'ed students, and some just don't care at all. Personally, if I would have been HS'ed, it would have been a party with close family and friends. HTH!

That depends

What state are you in? What type of curriculum are you using?

Are you doing a public school independent study program, an online homeschool program, a private umbrella school, a pre-packaged curriculum, or a curriculum of your family's own creation?

You don't usually have to take two years of a foriegn language to graduate high school, but it is often required for admission into Universities. If you pass the CLEP than you can get college credit for what you've learned. Many high schools allow you to use college credits to meet some of your high school graduation requirements.

Cher mortician,

I do not know what the CLEP is. Talk to the counselors at the local high school and ask them if CLEP is a substitute for 2 years' worth of foreign language. If it is - GO FOR IT. If not, ask how you can avoid doing 2 years' of classroom inanities.

Or get the home-schooling community to tell you how to qualify for the HS diploma's requirements. you are not the first to speak a foreign language without 'learning' it in the classroom.

is there any other exam that you can take to automatically get your 2 language credits you need to graduate school? (perhaps you ask the academy you want your diploma for--ask them what kind of exam passes they require).

and if you know CLEP is one of those, you could ask those colleges who hand out the CLEP exams whether they allow homeschoolers to take the exam--perhaps you just need to pay extra or register as an international student to take the exam. i think it should be possible, though :D good luck whatever you decide...
