I'm American. However, I am a citizen (I think) as I was born there and lived there until I was five years old, and I am still fluent in Russian. Two of my aunts live there, and they are helping me set up. I'm 18.

Is it true that they hate Americans (I'm only 1/4 Russian, so I'm not "totally Russian")?

An interesting question you pose. Having met many members of botht e Ukrainian Armed Forces, and as an individual who is about to have a brother in law who is a Major in the Russina Navy, I can somewhat answer this question.

The Russian military, for the most part does not "hate us". While, just like in the US military, there are people that hate the Russian Military, and Russia itself, the same goes for the US in regard to some members of the Russian military.

The days of the Cold War are finished, however Bush and Putin both (in my opinion) are a bit rash and silly over the whole Missle Defense thing.

Russian Military members are paid much less than US military and the long term benefits are less as well. Other things to think about?

Personal Safety; While in the military it is expected that you are willing to give your life for your country, in the US military there are many safety measures put in place so you can give your full service as opposed to your life during routine duties. Accidents do happen, but much less frequently in the US Military.

Sexual Harassment; As was mentioned by a previous poster, you have protections in the US military. In Russia, it is oft times that women are viewed as second class citizens vice the men in Russian society. Same would go in the military. Typically (even in the US) the military is thought of as a "Man's Organization" While some may disagree with this in regard to the US military, it holds VERY true in the Rusian military.

Given that you are interested in joining the mililtary, I would suggest that you might join one of the services in the USA. You wouod recieve better pay, better living conditions, and better treatment and training as well. Being fluent in Russian will also earn you extra pay, and might even get you into an exciting job within the US Military.

If you have reservations about a conflict of interest within your family, you may want to abstain from joining either the Russian or US military.

Lastly..you could always be a traitor to the US, and become a Russian Spy. But there are laws in the USA for US Citizens who do that, the highest penalty being death.

Just food for thought :)

До свидания!

Everything I've seen on the news about the Russian Army says living conditions are horrible. There are food shortages and life seems to be generally horrible within the ranks.

I would be worried about losing my American Citizenship too.

The key things are pay and training. The Russian soldiers are very poorly paid, less than a qurter of their American counterpart. Second they are very tight about who actually gets trained. In the US every person gets as much training as possible.

The biggest thing I can tell you as a woman, you are protected against sexual harrassment by law here. Not much chance of it there.

And being fluent in Russian will help you get a cool job in the US Military.

Being fluent in Russian would make you a great translator for the U.S. embassy. Or any other company that does business with Russian commerce.
