As they say, be careful what you wish for - you just might get it.
Are you sure you want a whistling cockatiel? I know someone whose parakeet learned to imitate car alarms.
Go ahead and teach it to hum. It will be more of a novelty, anyway.

I got three proven pairs and none of the females talk or whistle. They are pretty much quiet unless they want food/water. I read that some female tiels do whistle, but not very often. The reason why male cockatiels whistle is to find a mate. They continue to whistle through out the breeding period even when the male is in the nest box building a nest. He does this to let the female know that the nest is getting built and its safe while the female stands outside periodically viewing through the nest box hole.

Yes you can just buy whistling tapes or a little whistle. I have a grey cockatiel that is attached to me and he mimics sounds that i make. I can't whistle either so i got a whistle and blew tunes to songs i liked and he copied. Just keep doing it over and over. Hope that helps!

Not sure about the humming but mine reacted well to opera. Perhads a CD or tape of someone whistling would work. Good luck.

First, have you learned anything about cockatiels? Food, diet, vitamins and minerals needed, toys, activity....
Anyways.
The best thing is if you cna teach your bird how to do it by yourself. That way they know how you move your mouth and will attempt to do the same w/ thier beak.
I've never tried an audiotape, but I know that my parakeet has learned from my cockatiel how to whistle. It might work!

What you can do is buy one of those Cd's that are made to teach birds to sing, talk and whistle,. It gets annoying...over and over and over, but that is what it takes, the repetition, whether it is from you or a Cd.
They are allot smarter than most people give them credit for.
Spend as much time with it as you can.
