Two ways....
1. Get hired on by a police/sheriff's department and they'll put you through, or....
2. Put yourself through as an unaffiliated student (if allowed and if space is available). That depends on teh individual academy, though.

Well here in California you first do the written and physical exam then you must pass the background check and a polygraph test including an oral interview. When all these steps are accomplish you will be notified of when you can start the police academy and while you are there you are consider a police cadet and you will get paid.

Apply with you local agency or ask one to sponsor you for the academy. Different states have different processes.
Go to the agency's web page and there should be some info on the hiring process.

It depends on the state you live in. Most states have dept. sponsored academies, which means you must get hired by an agency first. Good luck!
