I just bought a generation 1 night vision monocular. It was something I won't regret. The very first night I used it, I was able to track a fox in my neighbourhood in some extremely dark conditions. If you are considering purchasing something like this, make sure the goggle comes with an infrared illuminator. This insures that even if you have no available light at all, you can still see in complete darkness. Truthfully, the quality was better than I thought it would be. The image was pretty sharp. Just be careful around street lamps or even small light, because the goggles really amplify the light big time.
--for a side note, I purchased the National Geographic Elite 3 times magnification night monocular.

Well they're better than your eyes in the dark, but for image information, then no they're not up to much. Good enough to ensure you don't fall over big stones in the dark, and see things moving round you. Not good enough to use for any detail, as the picture is a bit too grainy.
Remember though that NVG's still need some ambient light to work, they will not wotk at all in true darkness. The other thing to remember is that you will suffer problems with depth perception when using NVG's at night.
The lastest generation military spec NVG's are truely awesome, but very expensive and make things a lot better.

I think they are very good for civilan use, the only reason you would want any thing more is if someone was shooting at you even then there not bad. I used them when i was in the mimitary.
