I saw on freecycle someone asking for a free car for a single mom who was is tears and not sure how she would get to work. Her car was a lemon and died and not worth repairing. I offered to give my car that was for sale. The friend that posted the ad was 'moved to tears'. Than I didn't hear anything. I emailed a few days later and she said the mother would decide on Saturday. I felt upset. Not only was this mother in a position to 'decide', but she was functioning all week without a car. I felt taken advantage of and withdrew my offer on Sunday, mentioning that I also am a single mom and will sell it and spend the money on my own family, as the situation was not 'dire' like I thought. I got an angry email about how she is taking the bus and I, as a parent 'should' understand that busy happens and kids get sick. And thanks but no thanks. If you are not understanding she does not want it.

The lady is getting a free car & has to "decide" if she wants it? You did nothing wrong. Beggars can't be choosers as the old saying goes.

If I had already given her the car, I would have said nothing. But if she didn't have the car yet and still couldn't be bothered to pick up a telephone, or get word through a friend to thank you .. no, you have nothing to be sorry for. I think I would have handled it as you did.

Kids sick? Busy? Can't take 60 seconds to thank someone for helping you out of a bind? That's not much to ask.

You absolutely did the RIGHT thing. How dare someone "think over" a gift that is so generous. If they really needed it as bad as they said, they would have openly accepted it and thanked you graciously. I'm so happy you had the courage to take back your offer and keep the money that you can use towards your own GRATEFUL family!!!

you are completely right in your decision. that is unreasonable for her to have been upset. anyone would have done the same thing.

I would not fault you for your actions. And likely would have done the same.
