Generally, both will get the personal exemption. However, there are times when someone else CAN claim either of the married people on another return. This is rare though. An example is when a new couple (generally younger) gets married late in the year and their parents provided most of their support for the year.

You get one personal exemption for each person, whether you file jointly or separately.

If you are filing jointly you can claim two exemptions, one for each person. If you are filing separately and you claim two then your partner cannot claim any. There are only two exemptions in total for the two of you whichever way you file.
