Contact the DMV, provide your identity and request a duplicate title. As long as you are the only registered/legal owner, there should be no issue. The title will be generated, and mailed out in about ten days in most states.

You can get a duplicate for the DMV. Depending on the state, you may be able to get it over the counter, or they may require it to be mailed to you. Take as much information as you can with you. At the very least Make, model, year, and VIN. If you have the registration card, and the tag number, that will help too. Be sure you have your identification with you!!

Depending on the state, you may be able to "give" your relative the car, and they will not have to pay taxes on it.

If you give them a "gift" of the car, and they are so happy that they give you a "gift" of the money, you can avoid giving the government anything more than needed!!

Apply for a lost title, pay the fee, and wait.
