I have always heard that chihuahua's are high strung and so maybe this is part of her normal behavior. I have a Papillon puppy who 'grumbles' when I try to pick her up when she is tired, but she has never tried to bite me. However, she did nip at me when I was trying clip her nails, so I put on a pair of heavy duty gloves. When she nipped at me again, I became very stern with her and scolded her and told her No! No! No!Bite!!
Since I had the gloves on, it removed any fear she might have sensed in me and she became very submissive. Eventually I was able to remove the gloves and clip her nails because she realized that I wasn't going to give in to her. Remember, dogs will only behave as well as you make them. I always reward her with a 'cookie' after any activity that she must endure and does not enjoy. You might try this same approach to picking up your puppy. Go ahead and make it a daily excercise, two or three times a day. She will eventually come around. She might always 'grumble' about you picking her up when she is tired but you should be able to get her to not bite you.

One other thing I do is sharply clap my hands a couple of times. Example: I will say, No Bark Stevie, or I'm gonna (clap clap) spank you!!! She hates the sound of clapping and so she has learned to obey me. (I've never actually spanked her)

Chihuahuas are extremely, extremely skiddish dogs. They are scared of everything new. That is one of the main characterists of a chihuahua. Since she is only 8 weeks i am guessing you haven't had her too long... if that is true then you are considered "new" to her. Give her time. When she is awakened from her sleep ( or from just dozing off ) she probably gets startled. If you really need her to be awoke from her sleep, trying calling her name softly first. If that doesnt work, then try it a little bit louder until it does. Don't ever just go to pick her up if she is asleep.

It can be normal but DO NOT let her get away with it.
They can learn this is ok then she may try to slowly get more aggressive.
if she bites gently turn her un her back and tell her NO you need to show her that you are teh boss and not her.
Also if she should ever need meds and you need to get her out of bed then you don't need to deal with her ATTITUDE.
Just a question if you have or think of having a child would you let them speak back adn say hit you becayuse they are tired or in bed ?( I'm sure the answer would be no)
The dog is juat a 4 legged child you need to get control
Good Luck

Well, first of all, she's only 8 weeks old, so she needs as much sleep as any puppy or baby would. When she wants to sleep... she wants to sleep! Let her! Don't deprive her of sleep just because you want to play with her. She's getting crabby because when she's tired, she just wants to be left alone. You, as her caring owner, need to respect that.

Yes, it can be considered normal. Just like humans, dogs get cranky when awoken in mid-sleep. You are in her space, and when dogs are sleeping/tired are when they are most vulnerable, therefore it's like a defense mechanism to react that way.

Either that, or she is very spoiled. LOL.
