The white coat color is not exepted by responsible breeders and the German Shepherd Club of America. It is a trait bred intently by people trying to make money selling a "special" white shepherd.

These dogs are, just like your "regular" German Shepherd, possible great companions. Reputable breeder will not sell you a white Shepherd (and would not breed the dogs parents again, either) as the white collar is associated with a lot of health problems. Skin allergies and sensitivities, deafness, light sensitivity, intestinal and immuno diseases and a high probability for cancer.

If you love German Shepherds and you want to rescue one who happens to be white, go for it but keep in mind this dog might need more care that a non-white shepherd.

The AKC deemed the white coat a disqualification because of the extensive health problems associated with it. So, a number of breeders simply called it a different breed, like White American Shepherd and founded their own club. I would not support the breeding of dog that are a wonderful breed but possible very ill simply because of color so that some people can make an extra buck.

It's like the White Doberman problem. The only ones losing out in the end are the dogs.

I wouldnt want one for sure. too much inbreeding going on, lots of problems. A regular German Shepard would be your best choice

I wouldn't get one personally. Most of the time they are bred for color and when a breed is bred for color the rest goes out of the window -- temperament first and foremost. If you want a German Shepherd I would choose a black and tan or a pure black every time.
