Each cone contains multiple seeds. The cone opens high up in the tree so that the seeds may travel farther. The seeds also have a special shape that makes them slowly spin to the ground like a helicopter, this increases the amount of time they are in the air which in turn means that they can travel farther on the wind.

Once the seeds have dispersed, the cones dries up and falls to the ground

Pinecones are the way that trees spread their seeds before the development of fruit. They are also known as gymnosperms, or "naked seeds", because even though the seeds are packed into a pinecone, they are still mostly exposed. Angiosperms are fruit-bearing trees and they have a seed by modified carpels. Pinecones are shaped they way they are in order to disperse their seeds as efficiently as possible.
