Any dog would probably be fine with cats. Maybe not so much a toy dog, but I think that as long as you get the dog when it's a puppy and you keep a watchful eye on it when it's around the cats and you keep their encounters peaceful, then the pup should learn to like and respect the cats and the cats should do so in return for not feeling threatend.

I agree with the poster that said get a puppy. It is easier to train a dog to get along with other cats if you get him as a puppy, even some of the breeds that don't get along well with other animals, such as huskies, could if they were trained from puppies. However, be wary of some breeds, such as pit bulls, etc. Also, if you go here: http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do , they give ratings on how dogs are in different categories. And here: http://animal.discovery.com/guides/dogs/dogs.html gives lots of info on dogs.

Avoid terriers, they have a high killing drive (that's what they were bred to do!).

Otherwise research what you want in a dog!
