You know how hot it is there? And how many A/C's? If he can't keep up, he may indeed be fighting, but it'll be angry US troops beating him up because they sweated all day and want a cool tent to return to.
But seriously, it's always a possibility he will be deployed there. There are many jobs in the Army that don't go out into combat. HVAC repairman is one of them.
Be sure to join him in Germany, you'll love it!

I have been to Iraq twice and fought both times, because that's my job. If your husband is being trained to fix AC's, then that is exactly what he will be doing, fixing AC's. What he heard is not BS.
Contrary to popular belief, the majority of troops in Iraq are NOT fighting. Everything to do with the military is very, and I mean VERY, job specific. I'm sure your husband is learning this fast. Some of the answers being posted to your question are absolutely ignorant. Your husband is not going to fix AC's one week and go out on patrols the next.
During your husbands deployment, there will only be two possibilities/oppertunities for him to fight. They are as follows...
1. When he goes to Iraq it will be by plane and when he gets there he will be assigned to one of the many camps/bases in Iraq. He will either fly or ride to this base. If, and only if, he rides/convoys to the base, he could (unlikely) be ambushed along the way. But even so, his convoy is going to be escorted by a well trained security group of marines or soldiers (who's job is to fight). It probably won't be more than a few hour drive to where ever he goes and once he gets there he won't be leaveing.
2. The second is the same time window when it is time to go home.
Keep in mind this is only if he's traveling on the ground. If he's in the air, forget it. If his job is to fix AC's, it is very unlikely that your husband will ever need/get to pull the trigger on his rifle while he is there. You and your husband have nothing to worry about. Thousands of servicemen and women go to Iraq every year and never see a terrorist/enemy combatant. It's unbelieveable how many misconceptions are out there about Iraq. If you have any other questions I can try to answer for you, feel free to contact me.

We will never ever be completely out of the Middle East. There will always be some reason why we must have a continued military force there, with the hidden motive of protecting the world's (i.e., America's) oil supply. I have heard that it will be a very, very long time before we pull out of Iraq. The reason behind what I have heard, is that while we may have a presidential election, it does not mean that we will actually have a NEW president. I've heard speculation that Bush will enact a little known act of congress that states America cannot change presidential leadership during a time of war. This is just something I've heard. Makes one think.........

While I was in Iraq, I did some fighting, was a teacher for the Iraqi Police, and had more time off than what I have right now as an Active Duty Army Recruiter. I wish that I could go back and start doing what I was trained for.

People the US military is not in the Civil War, we are a high tech fighting force. There are three types of troops: combat, combat support, and combat service support. Only 20% is combat troops. Granted each person job is important an infantry man cant fight without food, water, bullets, medical care, his pay check, etc etc. Granted some people are doing convoy ops and other jobs they are not normally doing but they are usually told that before they go. Plus as hot as it is and as many tents there are with all the sand, believe me he will be fixing A/Cs 24/7. When those grunts come in off patrol in 120 degree heat wearing body armor beleive me there officers want them in a cool building to recover.

my husband is a mechanic and when he deployed to iraq, he performed his job as a mechanic. however, they were taskings in the unit and they rotated soldiers for convoy security, guarding the tower and guarding the front of the camp or FOB. he may not be "fighting", but i'm sure he may perform other duties besides fixing A/C's all day.

Had a friend who was a personnel specialist... no fighting, just a lot of paperwork.
Another friend just returned... IT geek... only fight was with the sand and the computers!
Transport troops... driving convoys. They drove and had guys who guarded them.
